I came to start the car tonight and it wouldn't.It turns out there is no fuel getting up to the filter. Is there a fuel pump in the tank or is it outside the tank.Iv'e checked the fuse, no4 in the rear unit it's ok,I would also think it will have a relay anyone know which one it is,

Many thanks in advance John Kerr

There is no fuel pump in the tank on early cdi's like yours. the fuel is sucked up from by the small mechanical pump, above and to the right of the main high pressure pump on the top front of engine.

thats a better design then as most the latestcommon rail cars have in tank pumps which give & contaminate the system with filings

An update on the problem.I had the car recovered to an Indie who said the problem was the low pressure pump which he changed however it was still sucking air, after a few tests it turned out the fuel line from the tank was rusty and had a pin hole in it ,this couldn't be seen until the tank was removed and the rust had only happened on the last piece of pipe as it comes out of the tank the rest of the pipe as new,not a thing you would suspect.
For a year now I have had a problem with the car going into limp mode, nothing would show up on the diagnostic,it now seems the problem is the turbo acctuator, this is the vacuum diaphragm on the side of the turbo which works the vanes in the turbo and gives full boost.MB don't list this as a separate part it only comes with the turbo.I have managed to get a complete unit off a 10000 ml car so hopefully when its fitted I shall have a car that goes as it should.
