The intercooler is leaking on my dads C220. aparrently he has just had a metal connector on the turbo done the other day, but he's still getting a hiss.

is this hard to get to? or is it a "dismantle front end" job? i wouldnt have thought so, but i want to get a good idea. we could do with having a look at it to see if its buggered or its a hose etc? they have plastic ends dont they? and they also cost a mint from merc new?

this weekend is shaping up to be a merc fixing bonanza with my propshaft bearing and his intercooler. theyre all silver too! LOL

If your getting "a Hiss" are you sure its not a CAT blocking?? thats more common on that model than a intercooler!!

When the CAT blocks up, the exchaust pressure has no where to go, so it blows out the front joint before the CAT, hence "hissing noise"!! gets worse on power the hotter it gets!

right, i'll check that.

is the intercooler difficult to access? just in case there isnt a blockage?

its done 180+k so its probably not likely to have those sort of problems on it ... is it?

Normally the hose going into the inlet manifold blows, if it has itl have a huge unmissable hole in it.The intercoolers can leak too mainly from damage tho, although ive seen the plastic ends come away from the metal inner.Look for oil and youl find the leak. The bumper has to come off to do the intercooler. If the cat is blocked youll probably see black smog under the air box.

cheers for the advice guys, we sorted it today and it seems that when the autobox got replaced the damaged a hose and the intercooler. the side of the intercooler had come away from the main matrix, and that was where the hissing was coming from. the end of the hose was damaged too.

replaced it with a new pipe and an intercooler from the local breakers, and its better than new! the replacement was a deeper one, so its working better than ever now!
