When I have played an albums worth on the cd player and eject the disc, the cd is very very hot, almost too hot to handle! Surely this can't be right? Anyone have any ideas? Also as the cd unit is integrated into the elctric system what implications does this have on replacement (if necessary)?

Not sure why this is, but mine gets hot fairly regularly (it gets a lot of use - loud.. )
i think it is fairly normal as i'm not sure if there is any recirculating air inside the bulkhead to cool the amplifier.
From other threads i've read, replacing the audio 10 is a hell of a lot of work and includes major rewiring of the car - not a job to be taken lightly, apparently

Replacing the Audio10 in a W203 (2001) with either a different Audio10 / audio30 or COMAND unit is very easy if you know what you are doing ;)

COMAND has a fan in it to cool the thing down. I dont think audio 10 units have this fan.

Bring the car to me and I'll happily extract the unit for you.

What do you want to replace it with? Can I tempt you with a COMAND?;)

hehe

Do you fit comand? and is the quality of audio better with that unit?

my audio 10 unit is proberbly the worse inbuilt audio i have ever seen, my fiesta had a better system as standard. you cant even skip within a track!

how much would it be to fit comand into a w203 sports coupe 2002?

Had a similar problem in a Rover awhile back.
Making sure the disks are clean helped . As the cd spins so fast inside if its searching for info and struggling. Also if they are recordable cds I found the cheaper cds got hot no matter what.

I only use CDR's in my car since I don't want to have any orginal CD's in my car. Not even the NAV cd's. Orginal CD's are at home where they belong and on my file server as backup. All music CD's are stored as OGG http://www.vorbis.com/ format on my file server. If a CDR doesn't work any more I throw it in the skip and burn a new one.

My next project will be a 300gb UBS HD in the car. I don't want to use any CD's in the near future. CD's don't have any future, this will be replaced by USB sticks / HD etc. Gone see if I can use a MC 3010 to install a USB HD in.

Hey bitonw that website link is great! What a clearly laid out set of instructions - not that I'm going to give it a go or anything (though I do have a unsightly scratch from the previous owner on my ashtray cover so it may come i handy if I ever want to replace that?). How did you come across that site - Tuomas Anu Johannes ?

Yup quite agree, I think I'll do the same thing and just use copies in the car. Your next project sound really interesting though I dont quite follow whats what! Is the MC 3010 a cd changer? and how do you physically control the hard drive. Sounds the way to go though.

That MC 3010 is a CD Changer. This is the thing I have to find out, I'm not even sure it will ever work but he you have to do some thing in this dark time of the year...
