W203 estate Different tyres front to back?

I was talking to a chap the other night -as y'do- about how i'd discovered this "really cheap tyre website" and that it was such and such for four tyres and he said " Ah but of course, the tyres are wider at the back than the front". Now I went out and checked mine and I have four 205/55 16 91w tyres on... Can anyone shed any light?

95% of all cars on the road have the same width tyres back an front, sporty models often boast wider tyres on the rear.

On my SL it could leave the factory with the same size all round, but many are bought with wider tyres on the rear,I have 10" on the rear, and 8½" on the front.

So for an Estate, unless it was the sports model, it would be 'normal' to have the same tyres front and back with no detriment to the handling? Likewise, if I were to put wider tyres on the back, given it's an estate, would there be any appreciable difference to ride or handling?

Aye, an inch and half wider wheels @ back will increase road noise + fuel consumption, increase grip in the dry and decrease the liklihood oversteer (i.e. the back end will less likely to slide out). In the ice the cars handling would be adversely affected. Skinny wheels are better in the ice

Indeed skinny tyres are very good in the snow,my 1028 RR had 5" wide tyres all round, and I did weddings in Sweden in the Winter, and the 300TE would not drive 1".

I have a W 203 2007 C220 CDI AG and the rear tyres are wider than the front - standard spec.
