Are the front wheel bearings an easy DIY job? Just wondered why I was getting the usual high priced labour charges.
I want to give it go next weekend, any tips, warning or special tools advice is welcome!

Cheers :)

I can print off the paper if you wish, its just a matter of working in clean manner, all dead simple to do

I have sent 3 papers, you do not have to remove the disc if you do not want to, plus yo will not have a clock gauge but most of us do it without

Cheers Malcom. The PDF's are excellent (as always)

I just removed the bearings and seal, the grease was red and had shiny bits in it.
I also have damage to the outer race of the outer bearing. I can’t see how I will remove this without a press?
Also, what would be the best way to set up end float without a gauge?
0.01mm of play is tiny! What’s the trick?

Yes, to set these up properly, you need a dial gauge - there's no alternative if you want to do the job properly.

There's no trick or shortcut that can acheive 0.01mm - it's too small a clearance to feel by hand alone.

Many people bodge the job using rule of thumb methods, but, I would strongly recommend getting hold of a dial gauge, and doing the job right.

Edit: You don't need to spend a fortune, see EBay item 270314190522 by way of an example.

One of those papers tell you that you use a drift or punch to knock them out (copper/brass) or if nervous ask any local garage.

When I set them up I just tighten until it goes tight , revolving the disc all the time and then back off a quarter turn

On the hub paper it tells you to press out 9c thats the outer race. this must be a spare part as it comes out

In the repair kit, you should get 2 new inner races, and 2 new outer races. Some careful hammer and drift work is required (It is much much better to press them in, but few people have a press available to them)

MB will press them in as could normal garages. I have used a large vice, or a bench drill, the main thing is to start them off straight

In the link below, there no outer race for the outer bearing (nearest to road wheel) in the 'repair kit'.

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...648716.649&CT=F&cat=69J&SID=33&SGR=030&SGN=01

I have a mark, I assume made by a stuck roller on this race, Will I have to replace the Hub, or can this be fixed? (picture)

The mark is on the outer bearing race, this should be pushed out of the hub. It's part of the bearing race included in the repair kit

A2033300051 - £33

The complete hub and bearings (but without plug and the nut and bolt is available

A2093300325 - £100

You should only need the repair kit.

WOW- it has to be said - you guys excellent, thank you for all the info.

I 'chickend' out and let MB do it when I picked up the repair kit.
They stung me for £35 to do both races, but I guess it is sure to be seated straight.
Car bearings just looks so delicate after playing with Trains, I just couldn’t trust my self to hit it!
Thanks again.

The controls and care required for mounting car wheel bearings are a lot less stringent than the Group Standards requirements for wheelset bearings!

Very true, you would expect the best tools and working standards where passenger safety is required. Scary how much is fixed by a sledge hammer, cable ties and adjustables (double sided tape and corn flakes box) Blue peter, eat your heart out.

Did one of mine (front one) about a month ago after mot.
Easy & straight forward.
Hammer and punch, turning all the time on wooden block. Then used each old race to tap home new one. Still cant believe they need to be so tight. MUST affect mpg ?
