hello my w203 270 cdi is due a gearbox oil change which i had planned to do myself . However mb service dept say it is not a diy job as new oil must be pump in via the sump drain or the oil pump will run dry on start up and fail' is this so or they just trying to put me off

To put it mildly........they are talking a load of b*"locks. Go on DIY its not that hard. Only thing to watch is keep everything clean and use MB spec oil. Access to a ramp is a must.

Another lovely story from them:D

At £165 from an indie its almost worth having the job done.

The parts and fluid come to just over £100

is it possible to drain the torque converter

Only by undoing the oil cooler and spinning the engine for a few seconds, or pumping it out via the oil cooler

The dealer does not change all of it,,only ½ , around 3 liters out of the 7.5 liters

You should not need more than 6 liters as some you cannot get out

I got my box flushed recently at a main dealer. They told me that it took 14 litres @ 16 euro per litre.... Was I ripped off??

Then you can loose sleep wondering what that 1.5 lts of contaminated oil remainig is doing, mixing with your new expensive precious MB oil !!... I wouldn't.

Time for second oil change ?

How about then emptying by just spinning the engine, then put in say 2 more liters and run that through, thats what MB do with the glycol boxes

Older Citroen Now :-(
I was charged for 4 litres by MB when I had my ATF fluis and filter changed..
I certainly like the "You can get 6 ltrs out by turning the engine several times, without disconnecting any pipes". method...
I shall certainly go that route when I decide to re do mine..
How long is the engine turned for?
Say 5 seconds at tickover?? (Mines a C270 Diesel) so I dont know how to spin it on the starter without it starting.

Tip: Stick a magnet on the outside of the sump casing, near the drain plug a few days before you plan to change the fluid. (the more powerfull the better)

This will trap any copper or steel particles in the oil flow and when you remove the drain plug allowing the oil to drain, remove the magnet when the drain is in process, any metal will drain with the oil.

This is the type of basic thing that the dealership will not do. Why would they bother. Not their car !

Added Line : You can do the same on the engine by sticking a strong fit-able magnet on the sump plug. You cannot stick a magnet to the sump, as it is aly. Most will know this.

There was already a magnet in the sump of my 7226 box when i changed the oil and filter.
