just for further info, I was at MB today and heard them quote £245.87 for an atf / filter change

So that makes it £100 more than an indie with only just over half of the fluid changed

Yes, never run the engine. Pull a couple of plug leads off and spin turn it over for 5 secs, leave it for about 2 mins and you will see it running out slowly, Repaet several times until you decide no more will drain.

Never let the engine start. The blades in the fluid flywheel / torque convertor are made of very thin aluminium and rely on oil pressure between each blade to keep them from flexing.

This is not just for MB, same principle applies to any vehicle which is an auto set up, cars and HGVs.

agreed for a petrol model, or disconnect the crankshaft sensor as the OP's car and Simon's car are both diesels !

yep, and get it done by one of the regular indies here, SAM|Unit, C55Black, hertzmercs etc, etc and you not only save some cash, but get the job done by someone who cares about the end result

Seems most advice points to 70k miles as the ideal change mileage. Don't forget the filter also and new (rubber type) gasket.

Evening all,

Got a 2008 w204 with 5g trans.

Service booklet says change oil & filter every 30k miles/3 years.

Full dealer service history on the car; trans oil was changed at 14k miles/2 years and 56k miles/6 years.

Now up to 88k miles/ 8 years, so mileage says do I again. But reading through this thread, I'm not sure it needs it. Opinions?

Lastly, if it does need doing, can someone point me towards some instructions - I can't find dipstick under the bonnet.

Thanks, david

Certainly change it if you feel uneasy by not doing so, but these boxes are tough and your last change should last for some time yet.

Rear left of engine bay is the filler tube position. You will need to buy a dipstick as one is not provided with the car - just a little blanking plug which needs to be removed first.

Certainly worth changing it every 40k miles, most of us do on here.

I just bought 5 litres of Triple QX ATF 134 which meets the MB236.14 spec. I got it from Euro Car Parts for £39.99.

The product code is : 522776181

It's currently in the box and doing what it should and perfectly at that.
