Not absolutely certain about your beastie, but none of the Cs I've ever driven had illuminated switches, aside from the warning light for the fogs. Its unlikely that yours is faulty so I guess not.

Had to check to see if our's is a W203...it is! It's a C220 CDI and we were sure that the switch did in fact illuminate...but it doesn't! Only the positions are illuminated and not the actual switch, and as has been said the red and green illumination when fog/driving lamps are activated.

just checked on mine. the switch lights up but the position it points at doesnt. altho you have only got 3 positions for it to point at. auto, side and headlamp. then you pull out for front and rear fogs. so if you turn it fully right you will get you dipped headlamps on. so i suppose the position illumination isnt nessacary. some german will have thought it up. it doesn't illuminate the parking positions either.
