w203 radio cd player not working switched to phone mode

can anyone help i have a 51 w203 c class my radio cd player is not working at all its just gone off all of a sudden when i switch it on it just displays phone , seems to be stuck in phone mode constantly even though ive no phone in the built in car cradle, any ideas or is it definatly a job for the local auto electrician ?

The radio/CD switches to 'Phone' if the phone mute lead is earthed. If it's a nokia kit, then I suspect that the phone kit has a fault, or there is a short circuit. If it's an MB pre-wire kit, then if it's a UHI type kit then I'd start by unclipping the cradle so see if that makes a difference. If it's a fixed kit, it's probably a sparky job.
You could also try pulling the fuse as I found the Audio 10 has a tendancy to crash from time to time and pulling the fuse for a few seconds resets it (make sure you have the code first).

A 51 W203 c-class doesn't have a code... It's controlled by Star Diagnostics. So you can safely unplug it to reset.

Pull the radio out and snip the lead for the mute pin (hint - its often yellow, but check first). If the problem disappears its either a fault on the handsfree kit, or a fault with the wiring for the handsfree.
