Hi,

Is there an easy way to find out if my steering angle sensor is faulty as the diagnostics suggest? I am getting an ESP Faulty or ESP unavailable messages on the display and the diagnostic codes are as follows:

C1036
C1172 - N49 (Steering Angle sensor): Internal fault
Sometimes it will also return code C1707 - Check control unit N47-5 (ESP and BAS control module)

I have tried resetting the sensor by turning the steering wheel 5 times from lock to lock but doesn't seem to make any difference.

Thanks for your help.

The sensor will need to be replaced, they do not require coding

Hi Malcolm,

Thanks for the quick reply. Is it obvious just from the codes that the sensor is at fault? And after replacing do I need to do any resetting myself?

Thank you.

In my original question I didn't think necessary to mention that we also have an automatic gearbox problem with this car (I started separate thread because I thought that the issues are unrelated) and now there is a bit of a development:

We checked the gearbox oil level today and found it to be quite low. It actually needed 2litres of the special MB hydraulic fluid to bring it to the full mark. After doing this ALL of the above symptoms disappeared including the ESP unavailable and ESP faulty messages. The car drives fine now.

Is it possible that the systems having detected low oil in the gearbox disable the ESP and don't allow kickdown?
