I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a 2014 mere c180 1.6 cgi. The thermostat temp. is running just below 80c and I checked this wit an OBDII reader and it confirms a lower the normal temp. Further the temp. drop when standing at light etc.

So I asked Merc about a replacement and the unit it's self cost £100 and seams to come with the hole housing. Further it looks like to access from the top the following need removing

1. Air Box
2. Air intake pipe
3. Air pipe to turbo.
4. ECU
5. Input manifold

Access from the bottom looks limited too. I don't have the procedure for remove/replacing the manifold.

Anyone any ideas on this one?

Further the coolant looks clear i.e. not coloured which is not what I would expect. Im planning to test the coolant when I get change , but does this sound right?

I had a thermostat changed on a C180 1.6 under warranty which triggered the EML. Mistakenly, the garage dismantled the car and then discovered that the t/s they had in stock was wrong. They phoned and asked if they could keep the car until next day when the replacement arrived as it was quite a big job to rebuild it.

So...it does appear that your estimate of the amount of the dismantling might be quite near the mark.

MB coolant is normally pink, if I remember correctly so there could be a problem there.

I never get why things that needs replacing every 4-5 years are not in locations where it can be done in 30 minutes?

One of the reasons I sold my Range Rover was because of this.

I did the 'stat on my ML350 on Monday and it is right there in the front, hose off, two bolts off, slide out and put new one in and you are done.

That 'stat price sounds expensive though.
You can buy the 'stat itself for you car from ECP etc. It is also cheap, around £15.

It is very accessible on the 350 indeed. Not sure on the £15 part.

Thermostats are practically a service part, you'd think by now they'd have designed a more durable one. At least the one on mine was accessible at the top of the engine with mimimal fuss. I bought a genuine MB for 30 quid
