Seems like I have possibly the worst engine and gearbox of the range according to some people.
Having not much luck with my car at the minute, poor idle, knocking etc.

My main issue at the minute is the gearbox. It seems to be holding the revs a lot higher and the changes have become a lot worse when cold especially.

I have a full MB main dealer history and the ATF was changed a year or so ago. My local indy (Autobahn Halesowen) read the codes and there was only the charge flap code for the inlet manifold (plan to clean the inlet soon) but nothing on the box!

Has anybody else experienced this before? Worth maybe going for a transmission mounts and gearbox service?

What mileage are you buddy ?
The gearbox does hold a lower gear for longer on a cold start in order to warm everything up quicker .
Engine and gearbox mounts maybe , but your indy would advise if it’s needed ?

I have the same car and I’ve had it for 3 years and it’s alway been the same when cold
Gears work better once warm
I’ve got use to it now
It drives much better in the summer

95k on the clock. That would make sense to be fair, I think I've just got myself a bit paranoid after reading a few threads lol. They did suggest about the transmission mount so I'll put a new one on and see if that improves it at all

I was told the same about the engine mounts but got my Indy to check and all was good so never bothered to change them

All MB autos hold low gears longer when cold. As the ambient temperature drops it becomes more noticeable.

Yours is probably a 7G+ so not a bad box at all.

I've got the same box. In cold weather it never feels as smooth. On a cold run, if I come to a hill, the box makes a noticeable downshift. But once warmed up very smooth, no problems. And yes, in the cold it does hold onto lower gears compared to warm.

Do you have any other issues? Check engine light etc?

The presence of engine fault codes can make the gearbox behave poorly. I would sort those first (engine not making right torque, gearbox behaves wrong)

I had an odd issue last year, where when pulling off quickly, say a road that joins a blind bend, it would be like I was stuck in neutral for a split second and the revs would red line. The specialist picked up some recorded missed gears (how I understood it), these were cleared, at the same time gearbox fluid was replaced. After this, no problems since.

Okay so it's a while ago since I asked the question here. Since then I haven't got round to posting what I did in the end...

Engine mounts and gearbox mount. My god what a difference. Car feels completely different now, so much quieter and smooth.

Fully reccomend to anyone who wishes to improve the NVH on the engine/gearbox.

Now jusy the fluctuating idle (bouncing rpm needle) to sort out
