Hi all,

New to the forum and hopefully after some possible knowledge.

Purchased my 2nd c-class, approved used back in august 2019. 2012 w204 c180 cgi 50k and have been chuffed with it.

Been running faultlessly up until this week. Doesn't appear to happen straight away only after running for 10-15 mins. Car will stutter/hesitate under light to medium acceleration. Has done it on two occasions where it stuttered once and continued as normal. On three occasions it has stuttered 3-4 times and then seems like its gone into a limp mode. The car has no power, very sluggish, will not rev past 2k. Also the gearbox is different, wants to change up to a higher gear and cannot be changed in manual mode with paddles etc. Once stopped, turned off and restarted all is back to normal.

No lights or faults appear on dash.

I called the dealer as i still have couple months warranty, as they are really busy he advised to call merc breakdown service. They sent a specialist out, didn't say much just that it didn't show any codes and would need to go to dealer for more tests.

Since looking around i have noticed the batteries, main and auxiliary are both the original ones, now 8 years old. Voltage when resting and left over night has been reading 12.1 and 12.2v which seems low to me and may mean the battery has seen better days. With the screen in eng mode it shows voltage up at 14v when running and eco mode in yellow. When eco does change to green its like the alternator stops powering and when sat at lights voltage dropped to 12.1-12.2v.

Could a bad battery cause the stutter and symptoms? Any advice or ideas people could suggest prior to taking it in would be helpful.

Cheers,

Dan

My car would throw a few strange faults mostly without ever giving a fault code although never effected the driving or indeed starting. Since replacing the battery at the start of the year all's well.
A change of batteries at eight years is something that will be required soon anyway and may well be the root of the problem.

Hi Oldspanners thanks for the reply,

Took a chance and changed the battery today. Sadly has not solved the issue so will be getting it booked in to be looked at asap.

On further driving if i use manual mode and have it in 3rd or 4th and give it approx half throttle it will do it pretty much every time. Its like a missfire.

Will give an update once i know more.

Update for anyone who may see in the future and have same issue.

Car also began idling lumpy and cut out a few times and put engine management light on. Dealer traced it to a faulty crank position sensor and replaced under warranty. Car is fine now
