Hi guys ,

Looking at a w205 2018 C220d 4 matic with the 2.1 engine 31k miles MB service history.

What's reliability/problems like on this engine ? and general problms on this model and anything that's common problems on modern Mercs of this era ?

After having disappointing issues with a BMW N47 2 litre engine, injectors , timing chain , oil sensor, nox sensor, all things you would never have expected on BMW's of old I am getting paranoid.

Any other thoughts on this model ?

Nox sensors and ad blue tank faults are probably the two most common.

A friend of mine has a second hand 2018 C22d and that has been trouble free during that time.

Do you need a diesel? Problems with the emissions control systems can be very expensive and often result in MOT fails.

From the past experience of the S205 I had
Front disks warping
Front tyres scrubbing on the outer edge
Artico cracking and pealing on the front seats
Electrical gremlins
And it had a longing desire to be parked in the dealerships workshop

I agree with the seats being poor quality and the front tyres wearing on the outer edge

Others will say what their experience was, but problems like tyre wear and front brakes juddering seemed to have been largely ironed out by 2018. I had both of these on my 2014 W205, but not on the 2018. On that car, I ran my tyres to 32k when I sold the 2018 car. Both cars needed NOx sensors, though; both under warranty.

A warranty is well worth having on these cars, as is a service contract with MB.

I had both of these on my 2014 W205, but not on the 2018. On that car, I ran my tyres to 32k when I sold the 2018 car. Both cars needed NOx sensors, though; both under warranty.

A warranty is well worth having on these cars, as is a service contract with MB.

Not quite true, my first 30 thousand miles showed a similiar lack of tyre wear, but by then the lower front suspension arms are starting to wear and the next set of tyres will never last as long as the first set. My first set lasted 28,000 miles, the replacements are already wearing on the edges after only 10,000 miles.

Yes...I had advisories for the lower front suspension arms at the second MOT, 30k miles. That probably depends to a large extent on whether the miles are mainly local or motorway.
