Well finally done it and joined the family, well the wife has so the post is on her behalf so I can do some fixing!!!!

Just got into the family via a 02/52 320 Avantgarde drop top and my wifes grinning ear to ear.

Just a couple of small jobs to sort but I understand they are fairly common. Unfortunately the smaller of the two speaker covers on the passenger door has been broken and could do with changing. MB have quoted £6 or so for the cover but don't really want to speand another couple of hundred on them changing it!!!!

Would be grateful for a fools guide in changing it.

Thanks for the help, as always very much appreciated.

There are 2 schools of thought for this.

The correct way is to remove the door covers and remove the broken pegs from the old speaker cover, push the new cover through the holes, and use a soldering iron to melt the ends of the plastic pegs, so that the covers cannot come out. This is the correct way.

The easy way is to push the broken pegs through the holes where they will remain, and use some glue on the pegs of the new cover, there are snags with this way in that its hard to find a glue that will stick, the grill is plastic, and the inserts nylon, a solvent based glue can damage the fittings, but with care OK

Hi Television,

Thanks for the reply.

In typical fashion, I thought that the original was simply a snap or clip on type but how wrong was I!!!!

The original cover is held in place with spring washers, once they are pushed into place onto the lugs/pins you cant remove them for love nor money and as it seems that the cover is fairly easily broken I suspect this isn't going to be the only cover replaced.

Therefore is it the case that the door card will have to come off and if so is there an idiots guide available?

Thanks again
Jules

Ok they have modified the fittings now, and use spire spring washer,,what you do with these is to put a small screwdriver under the prongs and bend them away from the pin,you only need to do 2 and they will slide off, the with a pair of plier, just close the 2 bent prongs. the other way if the spire clasp have a flanged edge, use a flat nosed pair of pliers, and remove the clasp by rotating the spire clasp

Would you like a "how to remove" the rear door cards

Hi,

Thanks again for the reply.

I only discovered the way the cover is held in place by trying to remove it - I inadvertantly snapped the pins or lugs and rthis allowed me to see behind the cover to see how it was acutally held in place - just as well I was going to change it as it is now completely u/s!!!!

I would indeed like some help in how to remove the door card or just enough so that I can replace the speaker cover.

Regards Jules

Door liner info sent:D

When re fitting the circular clasps ,use something like a pen top or tube that just fits inside the lip and push them on

Hi,

Thanks for the info - printed off and ready to use.

Was wondering - do you know if it possible just to release the bottom half of the door card just suffciently to replace the cover or is it the case the card HAS to come off.

Thanks Jules

Yes it is, as the cards can be beast to get back on.

When pulling the card away at the bottom, a flat object with a V cut out is the correct tool so that the door card is not damaged. If you use a screwdriver, then do lever the nylon clip and not the door card, as they can tear. do use a object like a pen top that just fits in the fixing clasp, this leave the prongs free to grip on the stud, do not push on too tight, that will allow for some give if any expansion takes place.
