Question for a friend:

On a CLK200K W208 engine - camshaft adjuster (solonoid for variable valve timing control) needs to replaced.

Are there any special tools required or any things to watch out for?

Ta!

Hi Grayb,

There are no special tools needed for this job. The solenoid is held on by three allen bolts on early cars and three trox bolts on later cars.
You will need to seal the new one with metal to metal sealant where it meets the front cover.

Ensure you order the centre cap for the new solenoid as it usually doesn't come with one and this just firmly pushes in.

If you find when the bolts are undone the solenoid wont move back enough to get off, you may need to slightly undo and move back the thermostat housing. don't totally undo all the bolts, just enough to side it back to get it out. if you go to far then you the coolant will poor out of the front cover. You have about 2cm to play with.

Hope that helps

Hi ET,

Can you be more specific on the kind of sealant we should use as you said

"You will need to seal the new one with metal to metal sealant where it meets the front cover "

The reason why i ask is that i replace mine 2 years ago without using any sealant and I noticed that oil is leaking from the sensor !

Thanks for yoru advise !

The sealant I use is a Mercedes product, of which I can get the number tomorrow, but I am sure a hylimar ( used for sealing water pumps) type sealant will do the job. only a fine smear is required and will prevent it leaking as it sounds like urs has. Obviously it is better to give the front cover a scrape/clean to ensure a good seal.

Mb part number is 003 989 98 20 10.

It takes a couple of hours to go off. Once its all fitted up leave it a hour to dry, before running

The three torx bolts are stretch bolts. These should also be replaced.

I used Hylomar when carrying out the same job early last year. No leaks since.

Thats what a would of thought.

Only thing to think off is that its designed to be used on water pump paper gaskets etc Not sure how it will stand against oil over longer periods of time but as you say should do the job just as well.
