I have a 3 mth old W209 CLK 270 with a multi-changer and a phone system. This system so far has locked up 4 times, losing volume, the use of the phone and the ability to change audio mode. It also will not switch off when the key is removed from the car. So far, the dealer has changed the radio head, the audio system/phone interface unit, the phone cradle and straightened out too tight a curve in a fibre optic cable. All to no avail. Has anyone else experienced this fault and if so, did you manage to fix it?

Sorry I'm going to be no help other than to say you are not alone. My CLK is 3 years old and I have owned it for a few weeks. The radio stopped displaying on the dash multi-display, it will not autostore stations. The blower decides when it is going to blow full-blast, and to cap it all having pulled a combination of fuses I now need the activation code to get the radio to play again.
After a service B two weeks ago it is now telling me I need a Service A in 1100 miles. I reset the indicator and now it tells me I need another Service B in 10000 miles. What happened to Service A then?
Other than that it's a fine car, I find I leave it in 'W' in auto mode, it's smoother taking off in second, all the torque's way down low.
Grew tired of the E34 M5, anyone want it?

Colin,
The systems are linked by a D2B optical bus. However, the head unit provides an electrical wake-up signal to the other units (CD and Phone), when you power-on (and off). These wires are connected to the top radio connector (C); I don't remember the pin numbers, off hand, but I think it's C2. This wire will go from the head unit to a central multi-connector, either under the dash or around the door pillar and from there it will branch out to all the D2B units (radial type of connection). You should check that this electrical wiring is intact. I reckon there is a dodgy electrical connector, causing your problems. As the head has been replaced and the optical fibres have been checked, I would now check this "wake-up" signal wiring. Use a multi-meter to do a continuity check from the head unit to the CD changer and phone interface. However, if the fault is intermittent then a visual inspection of the connectors and wiring might be good also.

Having said, that, I think that the radio gets its own wake-up signal from the CAN-bus connection to the instrument display and if the radio itself does not turn on and off properly with the ignition, then this connection may actually be the problem, so:

1.) Check CAN-bus connection (twisted pair wiring to C connector) on head unit.
2.) Check the wake-up signal from the HeadUnit to the phone and CD Changer units.

[Normally, on older cars, the radio would have a switched, 12v, signal from the ignition switch to pin A7 on the radio connector to turn it on and off, but this, including all illumination signals, is now done through the CAN bus on newer models. Your wiring, therfore, probably only has the permanet voltage feed to pin A4]

There is some more info here:

I see, though that you have one of the new-model CLKs and in this case, your optical data-bus system may actually be the newer MOST and not the older D2B (try to find out). Nevertheless, I think that this may also use the electrical wake-up signals like the D2B bus, in which case, check them. However, there are many reports on US websites about similar problems on new E-classes with the MOST bus. A reprogramming of the syestem, with updated software has been found to sort these problems.

EDIT:
I have just checked and the W209, should have the D2B bus.

This bus does have a DTC provision for diagnostic codes (ability to give fault codes) and version-coding (reprogramming and set-up), if all else fails.

Bandeedo, I would not use your gearbox too much in "W" mode as this will wear out your internal brake-bands and clutches much more quickly. It's only meant for icy Winter roads. There is another post on this forum on this subject, mentioning a technical memo from MB in Germany.

It sounds as if your dash problems are related to your vehicle's CAN-bus as this is the common denominator for all the items you mentioned. The CANbus operates with a twisted-pair of wires, which daisy-chain from unit to unit. If you have a break, the bus will not be properly terminated and data gets lost/corrupted.

Your service indicator alternates between A and B services. Do another reset and it should indicate an A service next.

Was it due for an A service last time, rather than a B? was it properly reset?
