Can anyone help with this gearbox fault. After having fixed more than enough faults on this car having bought it a few months ago I still have one that is in need of fixing.

When cold the gearbox changes up and down very erratically. Sometimes it loses gear completely until almost stationary before it re-engages. Very often it will get stuck in 2 or 3 rd and the revs go up but it won't change. When hot and engine is switched off then back on again it behaves normally.

When the gearbox has the above problem the engine light comes on with two fault codes 0715 speed sensor circuit A and 0730 incorrect gear ratio.

The service history says the auto fluid was changed about 15k miles ago. It is possible it is low. How do I check? If it is low there must be a leak?

I believe you can check the fluid level with STAR or using a bespoke dipstick. Does anyone have the exact dimensions of this dip stick so that I can make my own?

Any help would be appreciated. Mr Spanner

Will measure mine and send you figures, god that senence looks so wrong? lol
Coud be oil level problem, poss electric plate above valve body.

i would go with those two possibilities.

so do you measure your dip stick often MBserv??

I had my gearbox oil changed by the dealer and after a few weeks the gear changes became erratic. I have my own dipstick & the oil level was low when I measured it.

I took it back to them and the workshop had the car for about 40 minutes, on the ramps & a short road test, then told me the oil level was fine, there were no oil leaks and the gear changes were normal. Driving the car back home, the gearchanges were back to normal and I checked the oil level myself when I got home and found it was exactly correct.

If only they would have admitted they topped the oil up I would have more respect for them, but they would never think for a minute that someone had their own dipstick, and would prefer it if you thought you were imagining it.

Great, thanks for your measurements :)

Could you please tell me the length of the stick from the lower end to the stop at the top of the dip stick tube, otherwise the measurements you quote are in free space!

Many thanks

You can put the stick into the bottom and 5.6 cm is fine

Thanks, I don't have a dip stick I was going to use some wire or something. How long is the dipstick from bottom to where it sits on top of dipstick tube?

Thanks

As my post above yours. you need about 1.25 meters of curtain wire, you cannot measure from the top down,,push it all the way in to the bottom and then as above
