Clk 200 Kompressor 2004 w209 M271
Looking for suggestions and may buy a stainless exhaust for my w209 clk 200 Kompressor 2004. There was a bit of blowing where the back box connects to the middle box (is that the Cat or just a muffler?) . I have had that fixed...turns out there was no bracket on the chassis for it to be supported by, so it sagged a bit...causing a gap. All sorted now with a new bracket and weld, but it will all need replacing eventually...although good for a year or 2 now I'm told. My local Indie quoted a massive £1600 just to replace the middle and rear box...that's too much for me!
Has anyone had a system built?..."Powerflow" in Brighton gave me a quote for a "Cat back" system..but I'm not sure which bits it includes. Probably not the Cat I'm guessing! :)
Can anyone point me to a diagram or photo explaining the layout of the full system from the headers backwards? Or recommend a place to build a full system perhaps? Anyone with any experiences in this area? I would love to keep the car on the road but £1600 for half an exhaust system is not an option...could be time for that Nissan Micra :-( Haha...Cheers

Hi. I just looked on Euro Car Parts website. the pipe from the exhaust manifold to the back box for a 2003/4 CLK , which includes the cat is £350. The rear box for a C Class is £150.

Given that the CLK is much the same as a C Class, I cant see why the part prices would be greatly different.

£1200 would appear to be a bit much.

Not had a cat back system yet from him but Ant at ARO exhausts near Aylesbury is an excellent guy to deal with and he is also a Powerflow retailer (and very reasonable).

I did have a couple of manifold back systems made up by the Powerflow guys in Morecambe years ago and they were all excellent.
One was on an A8 Quattro Sport 4.2 V8 - they made up an X-Pipe and all the system back from there - I seem to recall £800 for the whole lot.
One was a Range Rover Classic 3.9EFi - full system from the manifold back. Sounded glorious but can't remember the price.
From about 8:40 onwards:

One was a Defender 300TDi - sounded great for a diesel plodder and went ok too.
Lastly an FC101 Land Rover. That sounded glorious.
You can hear it in the background from 3:00 onwards (and yeah I did make a bit of a hash of that bit):

We later redesigned the exhaust to make it sound even better :)

So as I thought, it seems the middle box is just a muffler. Both National tyres and John Haynes of Worthing said the middle box was the Cat...National quoted £945 and J Haynes £1100...just for that part "because the Cat is full of precious metals and therefore expensive".

Only the Powerflow guys in Brighton got it right in that they said the Cat is the front box. They quoted "about £350 plus 20% Vat" for a Cat back system, custom built in stainless steel. They said if I wanted a new Cat that would add about £200 to the price....much better than £1600 for the middle and rear only (John Haynes) or "we cant even get the rear box" from National!! At least National recommended the weld fix...only because they could not get the rear box "main dealer only" they said!

In the meantime I have had it welded and a new bracket fitted ...£75 and it is "fine for a year or 2" now anyway...according to Bayham Autos in Eastbourne who did the fix.
I will certainly take it over to the Powerflow franchise people soon and get them to take a look at it. They have places all over the UK it seems.

It really annoys me that some people, even some Indie Mercedes specialists seem to increase the bill by 300%, just because it's a Mercedes!
It makes it that much harder to keep these lovely cars on the road....you feel like giving up sometimes. But, with the help of this site...and thank God for the internet...we can keep our beloved vehicles in good shape despite those that seek to make excessive profit. :)

Thanks...seems the back box for the CLK is not so easy to obtain as the C class.. I was actually quoted £1600 for the rear and middle sections!
