Morning all from snowey Orpington! I have a really STUPID question! Just before the xmas break I had the radiator replaced and various other frontal components replaced due to slight crash damage, since then whenever I start the car I get a coolant level warning on the dash, now, there is plenty of coolant in the car but before I go any further - what level should the coolant be in the expansion tank? I have checked the handbook and it says it should be filled to the "mark" but I dont see one, only the split between the clear section and the dark grey section. Is this the level the handbook is refering to?

Thanks

No you are not stupid after all. The reservoir tanks on the mercs are really hard to read for some damn inexplicable reason. Same as the oil dipstick .The designers obviously believed that the customers either had X ray vision or would never bother to check the reservoir. IT IS AN ABSOLUTE PAIN IN THE POSTERIOR PLEXUS to see the level. I suggest you use a high powered led lamp behind the reservoir to establish both the level of the coolant and the guide mark at the other side .
The Behrr radiator is susceptible to early failure and because of the O ring set up cannot be repaired. With your led lamp check to see that there is not a leak down the passenger side where the O rings are located. The radiator referred to cannot be repaired and do not believe anyone that says it can.
There is a replacement radiator made in Denmark which is a fraction of the price ,can be serviced and fits in like a glove. In my view the cooling characteristics are even better than the Behrr.

There probably is a mark (well hidden) but I'd say if you can see fluid roughly half way up the expansion tank, it should be fine and it's probably a sensor fault - did they reconnect it when they rebuilt it?

Ive topped up the coolant so effectively the whole clear section is filled with coolant (sounds like I may need to drain some out) can you confirm where the sensor is located?

Thanks

I spent a while looking for it in WIS but gave up, it has to be in the header tank somewhere
