Informed by whom?

I believe the car already has a gearbox oil cooler. The engine oil cooling system would be more than adequate as it is

The a/c does dump heat into the cooling system. But if oil & water temperatures rise there's an easy solution - turn the a/c off

people have towed with 300td's for years. Possibly if you were towing in the hight of summer on a greek island you may need a bit of extra cooling but in the UK? - nah All Es I've had have had oil coolers as standard so I don't see why yours would be any different. Easy to check though.

I would get the gearbox oil and filters changed though - and possibly the cooling system flushed too - just sensible preventative maintenace given it's age.

Hi I use my 1999 w210 E300TD to tow a large twin axle caravan with no problem, even when returning from France fully loaded (1700KG), temp. sometimes creeps upto 3/4 mark but with A.C. turned off never gets to red mark. Only advice I had was to change A.T.F and filter ever 2 years. Hope this canbe of some help.

hello from a new member:D

i have never had a problem towing with any of the Mercedes i have owned.
as suggested above, the temp may get to just above normal, especially on a gradient, but its no big issue, and returns to normal on the flat.

i would be interested in comments about the price the main dealers are quoting for towbar fitting. i was quoted £2k for my ML. they said if i didnt buy their fitting kit the electrics would not work. went to my local towbar fitters who told me they had done dozens of MLs, without a problem (provided you know what you are doing!). cost £275 fitted, have had no problems.

now i have found this forum, i hope to look in regularly.
cheers
john
