w210 a/c condensor

hi
my air con is not working and i have been told by an a/c specialist that it is the condensor, he has given me a quote for £250 for labour, condensor and regassing.
i was thinking of having a go at doing it myself and was wondering if anyone had any details of the work involved and is it within the bounds of a diyer.
my car is a 2000 w210 e320cdi

£250 is an excellent price. I'd be biting his hand off if it were me. Just the condenser and a regas is probably going to cost you £200.

I've just paid £500 for the same job on my W210, albeit I did require a piece of pipework too and a new belt between the front a/c fans.

It is quite easy to do, though the drier should be replaced at the same time.

MB say it is, ask your air con guys what they think, things have moved on since the car was made

Replacing the drier is sensible when the system has been opened up, such as you will be doing when replacing the condenser. After time the desicant loses its ability to absorb condensation and the aircon ceases to function as it should. The receiver/dryer is about £85 from Merc Dealers.

Also when replacing the condenser you may find that you have to cut some of the pipes as the glands are steel into alloy fittings and they corrode making them very difficult to undo. The pipes are only a few pounds.

When you have put it all back together make sure that it is pressure tested with nitrogen and dye to check for any leaks before refilling with refrigerant.

I did try to pm you, but I suspect I don't have enough posts yet to enable this in my account. I have a 2000 W210 E240 estate which has a leaking air conditioning condensor. I wonder if I could touble you for the papers you offered Handyman last year on how to replace it.
