Hi All,

Ever since I have my Benz, the illumination of the Air Con control unit (The fancy digital one) is not working. Now I have been assuming that it just has a broken bulb and I'll need to get a different one (not expensive here in PL) but just recently I read this:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/20752205/Mercedes-Benz-140-and-210-Climate-Control

(here for a PDF version, although with less info: http://www.programainc.com/docs/140210ac.pdf)

Now - they say on both pages: "If you have a problem with ECT data or night illumination with the climate control panel you do not have the K1 and
K2 values programmed correctly. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THE CLIMATE CONTROL PANEL."

Then they proceed to give a McGuyver-like programming tutorial. Hold this and that key while blah blah - all seems doable but I am just curious - has anyone ever had this problem, and fixed it by doing the procedure described above?

Coz I am happy to buy a new (second hand) panel for 80 quid but if the problem is te programming then it wouldnt do a damn thing... hence my question :)

Thanks people :)

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
It will only be a bulb blown on the control,, yes they do have a full test program built in

Hi,
I have a C43 with a single zone digital climate unit fitted, and have used the built in diagnostic program, and having looking at the STAR readouts for this unit this built in program does exactly what the STAR interface does.
You may find this interesting, especially line 23, as circuit 58d is illumination IIRC.

Press and hold the the REST button for close to ten seconds and a diagnostic can be performed.

Here's what the codes represent:
01 = In-car temp sensor
02 = outside temp sensor
03 = left heat exchanger (heater core) temp sensor
04 = right heat exchanger sensor
05 = evaporator sensor
06 = coolant temp
07 = refrig. pressure in bar
08 = refrig temp sensor (23*9 = 23.9deg C)
09 = nothing
10 = Blower control voltage (great for evaluating blower controller problems)
11 = emissions sensor (B31) e.g. 3.1 = 31.v
12 = sun sensor 4.2 = 4.2v
20 = aux fan control 6.1 = 6.1ma (max 10ma)
21 = engine speed
22 = vehicle speed
23 = Circuit 58d e.g. 99 = 99% of battery voltage
24 = BATTERY VOLTAGE e.g. 12.5 = 12.5v
30 = left rear air conditioning heat exchanger temp sensor (not all vehicles; obviously)
31 = right side
32 = rear evap temp sensor
33 = blower control voltage rear 0.8(MIN) - 6.0(MAX)
34 = left rear temp selector
35 = right side
38 = software status e.g. 37 rear air conditioning
40 = control module version software status (?)
41 = control module version menu hardware status
42 = control module variant code 1st number
43 = variant code second number.

Am I to deduct from this the illumination works on a battery? And I imagine I need to use the left arrows to select what I want to edit, and then use right arrows to change values?

Line 23 refers to the voltage coming into unit from circuit 58d (illumination) the "battery" they are refering too is the cars battery.
Look at your line 23, if you have a voltage value displayed i would say the unit illumination should work.
You,ll have a blue/grey cable going into one of the plugs of the unit this is the illumination feed (circuit 58d).

No...these are just values you can read not change. As per post 2...its just the bulb. Use radio keys to pull the unit out...the bulb is on top...simples.
