Just this morning swapped my 18" AMG alloys for a spare set of normal Avantgarde alloys that came with my '96 W210 E420 Import. On fitting the Avantgarde alloys and retorquing the wheelbolts I've gone to test the vehicle and on going to move just an inch a horrible metallic sound can be heard as if the wheels are about to fall off! Do these alloys require different wheelbolts and if so what kind and where can I get them from (don't say the stealers!).

Yes, the do need different wheelbolts, and it would be higly dangerous to drive this way, you probably do damage to the brakes etc. as well. The so called "stealers" sell the bolts for very reasonable € 15 a wheel here in Ireland! You should have asked or the bolts when you bought the car by the way.

Does anyone know what type/size I need as I see there are quite a few sets of them on fleabay.

Put a bolt through the hole in the wheel and there should be 18mm sticking out of the rear of the wheel, you can measure this and work out the length.

They are £1.80 from MB or chrome ones from somewhere like Top Gear shops for £1.00 each

I was thinking more that someone would know what size bolt I require as there are many Genuine sets on fleabay with the sizes mentioned. They seem to be a mix of:

Length 60mm, Diameter 12mm
Length 50mm, Diameter 14mm

Hi,
You have your original wheel bolts, and the length of the thread that is supposed to be showing out the back of the wheel.
You only need a ruler and you could answer the question yourself.

Surely the wheelbolts on a W210 with Avantgarde Alloys are fairly standard and easy to find out the measurements?

No they are not and it depends on the wheel, and we do not have that info

I'm a bit confused here, all 210 alloy wheel bolts are the same. They have one size for alloys & one for steels. For your bolts to be too long to fit with the standard 430 alloys, I can only pressume that the AMGs were not genuine & had longer, non genuine bolts, or that they were designed to go with wheel spacers.

The alloys ARE genuine AMG's and I am aware that the bolts for these type of alloys are different to the normal alloys that usually come with an Avantgarde. I am just looking for the bolt size that go with a normal set of W210 alloys, so I know what I'm looking for
when I attempt to buy a set!!!!

elegance alloy bolts are a different style to the avantgarde as the have an extended section to the head.

the "working part" may be the same but if you fitted them to avantgarde it would look like a war chariot

It is no longer possible to buy the extended head version, MB only do two sizes now, and one of them is 28mm long

I take it that is thread length not total length of the bolt?

No, some wheels that were around in the mid 90's had a very long shank up to the head, 129's were an example.

I said that MB do the 28mm and I think that the other one was 40mm

been there done that ,its a bolt its too long get a machine shop ,me if you want, to shorten them, its not rocket science,if you have enough thread,12mm x1.5 pitch by the way ,1.75 pitch is a standard thread, make sure you are actually tightening the wheel to the flange, not the bolt to the shank, domed seating also i think some aftermarket have 45degreee seating angles

The only ones I can find on fleabay are 60mm in total length and only have 20mm threads.
