the leak appears to be coming from a electronic plug in modul to the gear box on the left hand side of the car adjacent to the exhaust manifold looking from the front of the car ,..the modul is protected by a bolt on metal shield and a metal clamp,...it started to leak after a 2 weeks lay up when i was reversing out of the garage up a 1 in 6 gradient,..the car is a 1996 w210 elegance e230 petrol engine ...any advice as regards repair would be appreciated, will it be expensive or will it just need a new seal, how much would it cost, thanks

hi, make sure it is coming from the plug-in connector. I had this on mine and after investigation i found the oil was actually coming from higher up on the box, gasket leak and the oil was running down into the plug in point.

i did notice oil smeared on the plastic sheath above it and will have another look,...but it was alarming to see a small puddle of oil on the drive and a trail all the way up,...i have since started the car in the garage and worked the geare box with no signs of any further leaks,..the leak only started when i was reversing up the drive which is steep and out onto the road,..!!

various
Oil leaks from the plug are common. Cheap to fix, ruinous if you don't and the oil gets as far as the ECU.

The part is called a pilot bushing. As said above very common problem. Expect to pay £15 for the plug and you will need at least 1L of oil.

thanks for those replys especially the warnings,...i will be booking it in at a independent workshop to have the job done,.....but one more question,...am i right in saying that the oil leaked because it moved forward to the front of the sump and leaked past the seal due to the angle of the car on the drive,..ie front down pointing towards the garage
