I need to change the brake pads (front and rear) and probably the discs too, on my 2002 E220 cdi estate but I'm finding it hard to chose the right parts when ordering online because there is always more than one option - different part numbers depending on engine cc, etc. Can some help me narrow down my search to the correct products so that I don't order the wrong stuff?

Go for MB ones, patten parts don't give the feel the MB parts give, i know a lot of folk will disagree but there not as good!!

And welcome to the forums!

Thanks S-A-M / U-N-I-T

Can I get them online? Will I have the same multiple choice problems that I'm having now? Do I need to remove the old ones and get the part number off them to be sure I order the right replacement ones?

Any pads made by TMD friction are OE to MB and they supplied MB in the first place, and all local motor factors in you home town stock them.

Go to your local MB part dept, give them your chassis number and they will do the rest,

The other half's A.class had brand new disks and pads on it when i bought it, they were crap, put MB disks and pads on it, different car!!!

I do add that since the right to say who makes what and for whom became law,two years ago, all component manufactures can now say who they supply TMD and Bendix supply 90% of them all.

Zimmerman make MB disc , they cost me £100 the pair against MB wanted £200 the ones I took off that had been there from new were Zimmerman

also as an afterthought, as this is my first auto, how do i slow the car down using the engine where possible untill i can get the brakes replaced? is it just a case of moving the selector from D to 4,3 etc like a manual, or is there another, better way?

the last of the friction material is as near as matters gone.(close but still there just thanks to a ridge on the outer edge of the disc!) i need it urgently first thing tomorrow for about 70miles then going straight to stealers for new discs and pads. just dont want to lose the brakes completely while im using it hence why i asked!
i can only assume theres something wrong with the wear warning system as its never appeared!

its the fronts thats ropey Malcolm, thats why i want to preserve them as much as i can till i can get them replaced tomorrow after ive got things sorted! (5am start!) hence my question about the best way to slow it down without using the brakes. had it been manual, id just have downshifted. however i dont know if this is good for an auto, or how (other than using the stick from D to 4,3 etc) it should be done!

for once im not bothered about mpg. just dont want to completely finish the pads off till im back to where i can get replacements!

im a bit annoyed no warnings came up though! must look into that while im doing them! im guessing discs and pads will be in the region of £100 for the front? i will look at the rears while ive got my jack out just to be sure theyre ok!

You will need the 2 sensor wires Pete, they are single on your car and work like this. A plastic coated pin is in the hole in the pad a few mm back from the end of the pad back plate.
As the pads wear the sensor pin will start making contact with the disc and this will wear through the plastic and the pin will touch the disc. once contact has been made the brake warning lamp comes on. Once you turn the car off and start again, the warning will not come on until you apply the brakes,,and the lamp will come on for the duration of that journey.

With the later systems they use 2 wires on the sensor pin. when the pads are worn the disc will cut one of the wires, this will put the brake warning lamp on, and it will stay on for all time until new pads and sensor have been fitted.

There is nothing to do on STAR with either system

all sorted now! finances and lack of work prevented me buying genuine so had to take what i could get from local factors. not happy, but needs must. discs, pads and wear wires for under £110 inc vat! stealer wanted almost £170!!!! max discount theyd give is the 10% trade discount i always get anyhow! so bit the bullet, saved £60 and only time and a few miles will tell if theyre any good or not! cant be worse than the old ones. the last of the friction material fell off the backing plate as i removed the pads, the discs were very thin and severely pitted, to the point where im not sure how the discs passed the mot! but sorted now!

Many after markets parts are very good these days, as I said MB do not make disc or pads, and they use many different suppliers,, what can happen,,it they go out of true the firm will replace them.

Pete --as well as going into your local stealer for a price --type your reg in the Eurocarparts site and price them --then compare you will see ATE (O.E.)--It depends on your budget? --if money is no object (as it seems to be to some )then drop it off at the MB garage along with a blank cheque--they will find plenty of things to replace as well as the brakes and discs ??
