W210 1996 Drivers door mirror problem.
Mirror will adjust up/down but not forward/backward.
I have taken the cover off and it appears that the motor turns a threaded (plastic ?) piece attached to the mirror backplate. As the threaded shaft turns it will either move the plastic piece in or out. This piece connects to the mirror backplate in what looks like a ball type push fitting to allow for movement. On mine it appears to have snapped as I can see the piece in the mechanism moving round and round and what appears to be the remained in the backplate.

If the above is correct, can this be fixed without having to buy a complete mechanism etc from the breakers? If not, can anyone offer any suggestions.

At the moment I just put the mirror in the correct position each time I get into the car but do not want to go down the blu tac/wedge path to keep it in position on longer journeys.

Unfortunately it seems the braingears site (very useful) is no more and none of the manuals available on ebay cover the E200. Anyone know of an english language site with similar info.

You can buy the motor separately without spending a fortune. It's held on with 3 screws.

My left hand mirror had the same problem. On stripping it down I found that 2 of the above mentioned plastic screws had went missing. Also the cast metal framework that holds it sprung in place was snapped. I am assuming the previous owner has clipped the mirror and never bothered repairing it. I repaired the cast part with epoxy resin, which surprisingly has proved very durable. But only wedged the mirror after positioning it correctly. I am keeping my eye on local scrapyards for replacement parts.
