Hi Guys

What do you think this is worth?

1999 (Nov) V Mercedes E240 5 Spd Auto Elegance Estate
Silver with grey cloth
Command and digital climate
full MB SH
MOT 08/10
Tax 02/10
Sounds a very clean car.
Miles are 59k
Not sure on owners, tyres etc

Are they a bit gutless or ok?

Thanks

Nice cars need some RPM to get them to do anything but at the high RPM they drive nice, good engine the 2.4 very smooth but prone to oil ways clogging at the back of the engine which is a box out job to fix.
If is smokes then it needs doing. £2000 tops for he car.

I got this

E-Class7.JPG

E-Class5.JPG

For £1150 with 172K on it & Full MB History & MOT

With yours being an Estate & only 59k i'd say £2500 to £2750 MAX!!

With regards to "Gutless" I have found mine to be "well up to the job" .....(Having come from a W202 240 Sport) I assume it's a "Pre-Facelift" Model ?????

Once a car is 10 years old, and drops out of Glass's Guide, there is no such thing as a 'right price'. Depends hugely on mileage and most of all condition.

It is just I have am going to be doing a long commute for 6/7 months over the winter and would rather not use the CLS/Range Rover or SL in terms of fuel and more the miles for depreciation.

Thought I would buy a "cheap" car for the time. Mainly motorways so want something comfortable, safe and something I can easily sell again next year.

That E240 Estate is for sale locally for £3250 which I know is too much for it. I had thought £2750. Someone I know has seen it and says it is immaculate but a pre-facelift.

Originally I was looking at a 190 and then the W124 but they are more than the W210!! Also looked at a 1999 Jag XJ8, BMW E36 323 Touring

wee bit of "Lateral Thinking" here.....................

You have say £2k to spend on a "Runabout" you also have a V8 rangie

Why not use the £2k to LPG convert the Rangie I have a V8 Discovery (same engine as yours) on the "Long Run" I can get high 30's MPG

This would "Help" you in various ways

A you don't have another car to maintain

B it would push the value of the rangie up (When you come to sell it)

c Your driving a car "You trust & know about"

d LPG is only 45p / Litre It would "Help" when using the rangie as you do now

JUST AN IDEA for you to "Play with"

Thanks Keith, had thought about it but am a pure petrol person. Sense would dictate I bought TD6 RR and a CLS320Cdi but love petrol engines and never fancied a diesel, although I know they are great these days. Same with LPG, just dont fancy it :) It is also all the stone chips and wear and tear on the cars, I am quite fussy about keeping them in good condition and winter salty roads with chips etc, would rather have something older

Good idea though

Running two cars, buying and selling, plus repairs on an old car, could cost you far more than the effect on depreciation of extra miles. And the safety of modern cars in the event of an accident is way ahead of older stuff. For long commutes what mpg would you expect from the CLS?

I will get generous expenses but would be over 16k miles in next 6 months or so.

I had to do this before and used the SL and regret it now as made a mess of the paintwork as some of it is country roads.

Perhaps a £700 190 would be better

Hi Keith,

I think "somewhere" in this we have to bring into the equasion "IMAGE".

Rolling up to the office or a customers premises in a £700 190 would do ZERO for your Image. ( & looking at the cars you have/had, i think a 190 would last for about 10 minutes!!)

The E240 you originally thought of would do FAR BETTER & give you "The Edge" on showing up to work / office.

See if you can "Get him down" on price & GO FOR IT.

As me Dad used to say .............Nothing ventured,Nothing Gained!!!!!

The 240 isn't the quickest thing around. Cruises nicely but you'd have to wait for pick up, even on kick down. I'd look for a 320 in preference as fuel costs are the same.

That car I mentioned is now sold but I think the 240 may have been a bit slow.
Been offered a Subaru Legacy 2.5 4 Cam GX Estate with lux pack which sounds an interesting AWD machine with massive spec. One owner from new and full Subaru history. Interesting..........
