I got caught out on Monday when I ordered a new thermostat for the E300TD. It had never been changed since the car was new and there has been a change from the original unit.
The original is a single unit where the thermostat is intregal to the inflow pipe from the radiator. The new unit is two piece, thermostat and inflow pipe. When ordering remember to get both.
In attached thumbnail unit 73 is the old one and 77 and 89 is the new. The new pipe is about £12 so very cheap for Mercedes parts and only needed once. Hope this helps someone.
