W210 E320 CDI Estate
Can anyone help me with this. I have been through MB here in Ireland and they cannot solve a problem with a 2000 E320cdi Estate.

Since new the car has been blowing bulbs consistently in the rear light clusters, only the tail and stop bulbs. It's also blowing headlamp bulbs big time. Only once in 4 years have we replaced a front fog light bulb [front left] and one rear. The rear tail/stop bulbs and give no more than 3 or 4 weeks before one blows. Headlamp lasts maybe 3 months. The result is everytime you turn on lights you get the warning beep. A three hour journey at night will invariably lead to a blown bulb en route.

I see quite a few estates with blown bulbs and suspect there is a problem but MB cannot help.

I also have a possibly related problem in the the brake circuit interferes severely with the AM long wave radio reception when the brake pedal is pressed. From my own limited knowledge I suspect there is a surge from somewhere blowing these bulbs. I did think brake switch which might explain losing the stop light but [to me anyway] does not seem to explain losing the headlight or tail light bulbs. I now have one of the front headlamp bulb holders recently melted but this was not the case in the beginning so am sure its an effect rather than a cause.

I also had an ABS pump failure last August.

Any constructive advice is good. I am quite happy to take the car to UK, regularly drive Swansea-Kettering M4/M5/M6/A14 and also Holyhead-Kettering A5/M56/M6/A15 and would be open to a good shop.

Many thanks.

iirc my old C class did the poor reception on AM with the brakes on.... weird

but - blowing bulbs is almost definately a 'bad earth' - trace the wires from the bulbs to the chassis, and make ure that the contact is clean.

also - it could be the alternator regulator dying, and over voltage-ing - check- with the engine at off that you have 12v across a bulb, then engine at tickover you should have 12 -13 volts, and at 3000 rpm you should have 14.4, no more (14.5 is possible, 14.7/8/9/ 15 is a no no)

im not sure if your car has a 'over voltage protection relay' (does anyone know the MB name for this - so i can look it up?) - but these are known problem areas..

Blowing bulbs

I can't help with your query but I can recommend an independent garage in the UK. Andy Gale is based just off Junction 1 of the M5 in Smethwick so he's handy for either of your routes. He regularly responds to queries on this site and I had my first service of my newly acquired W124 carried out by his guys and they did a really good and thorough job. Telephone No is 0121 558 4848 website www.AndyGale.com (I think he's also got another website address but I can't remember it!).

Best of luck
