W210/E320 fuel gauge indicating error

Filled my E320 Avantgarde to the neck with fuel a few days ago at a perfectly level filling station. Fuel gauge reading just a tad above 3/4 full and trip computer showing FOB of 67 litres. That all makes sense with the gauge but on previous occasions and using the same gas station gauge would show full and computed FOB of 80 litres which is correct.

Thinking that the float sensor if it has such a thing in the fuel tank may be sticking or has developed a fault..?

Any thoughts from anyone...?

It is a common problem. The float gets gummed up and sticks.
I have heard some say that a good fuel additive can free it, others that it requires removal and cleaning. A dealer will recommend replacement.

As for myself I just put up with a guage not reading full when I know it is as in my case I know that the lower readings are correct.

As Chris above, try some injection cleaner in the tank,it oftens cleans the float gauge

I agree, Its more important to know when its getting near empty, rather than know its full!!!

You will certainly know when its full.....because your wallet will be empty

Thanks Chaps! I will try out the fuel additive/injection cleaner. Good suggestion.
