Or look front and rear first to see if a rod has come adrift. I effected a temporary fix 4 years ago...still going strong.

Mine wasn't the rod, it was the sensor

Took it to AutoMerc as they are literally a 5 min walk from the house. Headlamp issue identified. The rear spring is broken and that had in turn broke the connecting rod for the headlamp levelling.

Sounds plausible?

Bill to follow. Initial impressions are positive for them. I'm always a bit circumspect with a new garage but he seems ok. Busy workshop and an agreeable girl on reception.

Spring being fitted today and rod tomorrow as that had to be ordered.

Not plausible. You had a broken spring and a broken rod...but they are not connected.

Rear spring had snapped in two and had partially fallen in on itself so whether or not it broke the rod doesn't really matter, it had to be done. I had not noticed any difference in ride though. Anyway, headlamps pointing where they should be now. £222.38

It is indeed possible for the rear spring to break the linkage, as it sits next to the spring on this model.

Your car must be worth a fortune by now Toby.

Yep, I suppose if it broke in two...the usual break is the bottom 2 inches. It seems the self levelling took care of the ride height!!

... I just wanted to observe that you have a Merc garage literally 5 minutes walk from your house and a car that quite evidently (25 pages later...) needs a lot of TLC yet have only now given them a shot... ? That's kinda... weird....? ;) Or do you really totally LOVE your 'regular' mech so much you weather storm and snow to get to him instead? (I know I do...)

They've only recently moved there (though they were only 5 miles away before) plus I'm not due back in Suffolk any time soon to see Alex and I couldn't be bothered to drive over to Star in Caversham as that would mean leaving the car there and it's hassle for work.

No self-levelling suspension on mine AFAIK

Next up: grumbling road-speed related noise and friction sound when braking from 70 mph (plenty of thickness on the pads).

I always thought yours was an estate (probably because most are).

I know the AG estates (or maybe all estates) have SLS but I don't think the saloons did

Oops...don't know why I thought you had an estate.

All E class estates since w124 have SLS.

139,478 miles: 2 x Continental SportContact 3 (MO) for the rear £211.24

The Michelins they replace only lasted 12,000 miles which is very disappointing, so I hope these fare better.

Front 2 will need replacing next month.

Doubtful, Continental are on the SC5 now, SC3 was finished a couple of years ago.

SC5 is a massive step forward

How on earth can Michelins only last 12,000 miles Toby?

I get at least 3.5 times that as a minimum and have recently got 70,000
plus !

Had I read your "log" for the first time a long time ago, I would never have bought a W210. Still, I suppose that you remain in love.

Regards

John

I had just about 20k

out of my Falkens. The mem had 30k from a set of Pirelli Cinturatos a few years ago. I've just put some Toyo Proxes CF2's on, all-in with Nitrous Oxide fill, for £375.

The tyre life of those Michelins was very surprising I have to say. I don't drive like Stirling Moss and I rarely have any load in the back. The wear was even across the thread. Bit of a head scratcher. I'd be surprised if I can better 20,000 on the rear with any make.
