143,871 miles: MoT fail then pass.

NSR spring snapped at the top. That makes both rears this year and all 4 in my ownership. Advisory: RH headlamp dull. £174.74

Some good news. The new windscreen has activated the variable wipe. I noticed that the old windscreen didn't have the aperture for the sensor when the man turned up to fit the new one. So all those years I've had the wrong screen.

In my world the previous owner is going to hell in a handcart.

the same thing happened to ours

I had the paint fixed up after we bought it, full-ish respray. the screen had been bodged in, and it cracked on removal. with a new, properly fitted screen, the rain sensor worked again. It does make you worry about workmanship doesn't it.

That was lucky, the wipers often need setting on Star after a new screen.

Question for all you electronic chaps. Since COMAND has been refitted I have the following issues:

• Steering wheel volume control not working
• Dash central display does not list radio station/track being played (it shows --- )
• Dash clock incorrect (it should take the signal from COMAND)
• COMAND buttons do not illuminate when headlamps switch on
• COMAND display screen does not dim when headlamps switched on
• Unit does not switch on/off when ignition switched on/off
• Units switches off after 45 minutes when engine on
• Auto volume level not working

I'm booked in to have the steering wheel emulator removed as they forgot to take it out. Could that be responsible for all or some of the above?

It sounds like they have missed the canbus connector out of the back of the Comand unit.

What was the steering wheel emulator for?

There is a separate Robert Bosch CAN that connects the comand to the steering wheel and cluster, it could be OK once that emulator has been removed.

Car back today and all back to normal. It was the emulator causing the issues.

Car now loaned out to my brother for an open-ended period. I will keep track of any expenditure but he's now running it. I have warned him of its quirks and areas which will need attention. He has also wisely heeded my advice and taken out breakdown cover.

The inevitable has happened, as my gut feeling said it would. Brother is stranded at Stansted airport with a car which won't turn over and the gear lever won't move from park. EIS issue? Column unlocks though.

Recovery truck on its way and I've told him to recover it to Swift in Milton, Cambridge, where he lives.

Knew I should have sold it.

Does the dash show the gear that he is in? (P,D etc)

Didn't think to ask. He was dropped at Swift at 02.00 this morning and understandably just wanted to be home with his kids. Last you need back home from a flight is a non-starting car.

See what they say. They seem to have a decent reputation and have a Merc background. If my brother doesn't want to use it anymore then I think it's eBay and no reserve!

Could be the blown fuse on the K40 module, possibly from a shorted control case cooler motor - think Colin may have put up a 'how to' on this years ago?

Yes in the DIY where the fan thats only fitted to UK cars goes short circuit, just remove the fan as not needed and replace the fuse.

New battery fitted and it appears to be all ok. I know I had a battery 5 years ago but it's not in this thread. I expected longer TBH. £153.00 includes time spent by garage.

I have a mate whose thinking of a an older 320CDI, low miles, but this thread exposes quite a few weaknesses in the E320CDI!

What are the petrol versions like, anything to look out for, it will be an older car 2004/5, 70K miles.
