Hi,

If you could step down to the 320, then I can tell you that it's a decent power to weight ratio. Can tootle around town or thrash down to the alps either way it's still a pleasant drive.

However the V8 may sound a little nicer.

Good luck.

Thanks for that! I am hoping with the 430 to perhaps get a little bit more car for the money so to speak ... I would LPG convert whatever I got anyway, whether 320 or 430, there's only 2 m.p.g. difference on average!

The 430 has no particular horror stories........capable of vast mileages as long as you keep on top of servicing......not sure how well or easy they are to convert to LPG

I think your main problem will be body related more than mechanical.....210's are not doing too well on rust issues. Check the tops of the doors by pulling back the door rubbers and checking for rust. Check wheel arches, front cross member in engine bay under radiator for rust perforation.

If the car is clear of rust and you decide to purchase, just make sure you keep the wheel arch lips clear of mud, as this will stop the arches rusting out.

Also MB claim that the auto boxes are sealed for life and never need to have the oil changed......I would ignore this and make sure you get the box oil changed @ 100k miles.

Good luck.

Thank you mjtray ... I have been running a '98 E300 TD Elegance estate for the past 247,000 miles and have experienced the rust situation at 1st hand ... it's been into the bodyshop twice in the last 2 years for treatment of rust on tailgate, wheel arches, front panel, patches behind rubbing strips on doors, and door bottoms. At first I thought this was purely down to the mileage, and I believe the later '98 E class range onward through about '02 fare worse still, from all the posts on this forum.

My good old diesel is still going strong but starting to feel a little tired and now that my local LPG conversion specialists have mastered the new gas injection technology and claim that a V8 430 would present them with no problem, I am very tempted to upgrade to a 430 which at petrol equivalent prices would return around 50 m.p.g. ... significantly better than the 35 average from the diesel, and worth doing with my 70K miles per annum. Great to hear the V8 lump is so good - and 285 b.h.p. means it'll never be over-worked. Thanks again, will let you know what I decide!
