W210 Engine Fan Problem

My 2001 E270 CDI is coming up with an engine cooling fan warning in the instrument panel. The fan turns, but relatively slowly with not much air movement, so the engine starts to overheat in traffic/standstill. Is there any way I can determine if it is in fact a fan problem before I replace it, or could it be a controller/sensor issue?

Your fan looks to be a thermo type, do the carrot test. At 85c or more the fan should slice a carrot,if it stops then the thermo needs changing.
