E240 Elegance 1998
Hello

I am new to this forum and would appreciate an answer to my query!

I have an W210 E240 Elegance with nearly 190k on the clock - V6 2.4 litre engine series 112 and gearbox 722.609.

I have the option of buying an accident damaged W210 E280 but with low mileage and was wondering if the engine and gearbox could be retrofitted into my E240? The engines and gearbox seem virtually identical.

I presume my chassis/breaks can handle the slight increase in weight/power?

If it does fit would the ECU, differential, exhaust system etc need to be changed as well?

Thanks in advance for any help on this!

Hello and welcome to the forum, you would need the ECU, but care neds to be taken as the ECU is part of the car's EIS system and you may need the igntion switch as well.

There is another debate going on here over this very thing

There are also several ECU's that are different with different connectors so you will need to change the looms over too.

See my listing for a W210 240 in the spares section.

Hi

Thanks for the advice. I kinda expected it to not be as straight forward as I had hoped!

I will have a look at the E240 engine/box route rather than risk a compatibility issue. I presume an E240 would be a straight swap for a 1998/1999 model or again are their potential differences on the ECU etc that also could prove to be an issue?

hi stu, i agree with malcolm, try "dronsfields" at oldham.lancashire. tel: 01457871717. ask for max in spare parts. i have had several parts, they are guaranteed for three months, when i visited them i have never seen so many mercedes cars, they supply parts all over europe, their mechanics and service are also very good. been going 30 years. good value for money. herbiemercman.

If your getting the whole car you should have everything you need for the swop, it might just end up being more work than your willing to do, i always look at it and think, if its that much work to fit a slightly bigger engine, then i might as well fit the biggest one i can squeeze into the hole. :D

worth thinking about the resale value as well if your not planning on keping it, modified cars are always worth less than standard ones to joe public, and to interest an enthusiast it may need to be more modified than your planning on.

Hi all thanks for the advice.

I would class myself as a sucker for the W210 - despite all the known "issues" I still love the car and cant bring myself to get rid. It always gives me a feelgood factor everytime I drive her and cant find an alternative that I would want to replace it...

Having had the car for 10 years and 190k miles its done solid service. Yes it has a bit of rust (which is mainly cosmetic) so I am seriously considering the replacement engine route. I will speak to Dronsfields and also Crewe engines who also offer the remanufactured engine route.

Maybe a few grand will allow me to run my w210 for another ten years!!!
