W210 - Internal light / IR probs

Hi all,
After a recent service, WHERE THE BATTERY WAS REMOVED FOR CHARGING, we have noticed two faults with my wifes 1998 W210 E300 TD.

1. The Front Courtesy lights ( that normally come on when you open/close doors ) aren't coming on. Have checked the bulbs, the main switch still works, and have tried the manual overide to the courtesy switch but it's still not working. The rear internal lights are going on / off making me think the switches in the door ( which look fine ) are ok.

2. I need to be really, really close to the car before the remote locking works - on either key. The red lights on both keys are flashing but unless I'm within a few feet the remote wont activate.

Is it coincedence that the battery was removed and then these faults appeared ??

Any ideas how to sort it out ??

Many thanks
Stewart

Stuart you must first check the fuses,,you should have a fuse chart in with the tool kit and spare wheel

Many models have two separate unlocking systems.
An IR one which operates if you are close to the car.(drivers door handle)

And an RF one which has a longer range.
It sounds as if the RF one needs resyncing, your dealer can do it, so can you if you find the instructions which may be in your handbook if not someone here will advise.

The reason there are two systems is that the normal RF one can suffer from interference from mobile radios and other transmitters, getting close to the car and using the IR overcomes this problem.

Interestingly On some French cars the rf system could lock out as a security measure if it saw 3 or 4 attempts with an incorrect but similar code. It assumed someone trying to enter the car illegaly. However it may have simply been a number of similar cars in the same car park! The system locked out for 30 mins then reset. There was no IR so no way out for the unfortunate owner who had to wait, by which time he may have called the recovery service, when they arrived after 30 mins there was nothing wrong as the system had reset!.

I am also experiencing a malfunction since disconnecting the battery on a 1999 W210 E240. None of the windows now have the "one touch" function. I have to hold the switch. Windows on this car also need the key in position 2, or the engine running. More disconcerning is that the drivers' window now only goes up an inch or two at a time. I really have to coax it up. The others move if I hold the switch. Not likely to be a fuse since it operates, albeit in a non-standard way! I will visit a dealershipo in a few days for an opinion. I have searched here but nothing similar found. Anyone else had this?

Many thanks for the replies.

I have checked all the fuses ( under rear seat, in car at side of dash, and under bonnet ). I will investigate the RF option for the remote, that sounds very likely.

Still have the annoying problem of the internal lights not working, and now the dark nights are here I'd like to get that fixed for her indoors.

Interestingly the rear wiper has now started doing funny things - only going so far across on each cycle. All these electrical faults since the battery was removed, mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Any more ideas welcome while I investigate the RF solution.

SOLVED - for the moment, and forever I hope.
Car wouldn't start this morning so I replaced the battery ( I hope 88Amp/hours is ok ).

Replaced the battery, now I can unlock the car from miles away, more importantly the inside lights are working again ( I was worried about that, now it's getting dark at night ).

The rear wiper is still sticking half way across though, except when it's on washh/wipe, then it works fine !!! Baaahhhhhhhhh.

Thanks for all the ideas folks,
Stewart
