Hi All

Just really beginning to get to grips with the car now. Can any one tell me the best places to use as jacking points for a trolley jack?

Thanks

malcolm is bang on

just one little thing...it might pay to build up the bottom of the cup of the jack to prevent scratching / damage to the plastic sill covers.

just a piece of mat cut to shape should give enough clearance.

best to leave a little lip though to help prevent the car from leaping off the jack ....we hate it when that happens don't we !!!

I use a half a dough nut with the hole in the middle when the jack cup is too deep, or you can turn the cup on the jack round so that the claws miss the sill.

I use a small 4inch by 4 inch piece of wood which sits on top of the hydraulic jack and sits directly under the round jacking points, it never damages the jacking point and because it's wood, it takes the strain no problem

never ever jack the car directly with your '2 tonne' hydraulic jack as they normally have sharp edges on the jacking up point, those sharp edges will definetly damage your car's jacking points but the piece of wood between the jack and car solves that problem and gives you some extra clearance.

The ring donuts don't have jam, buy day old ones then leave them for another day or so and they should be fine.

Donuts are no good, what you need is a Chorley cake. Its the correct diameter and not too thick, plus the powder soaks up any dirt/oil for you.

Please excuse me here if I say something from a safety angle, the idea of the cup on the jack is to stop the car from sliding off the jack, a piece of wood is ok but wood can break, and the car could slide off. If you are working under the car do use axel stands and lower the car onto them. Do not rely on the hydraulic jack alone, when they explode, and they do, things come down fast, I have had it happen and it left my V70R sitting on the ground with no wheels on it. It makes you think about raising it again, but that is another story

ah yes i always use axel stands in addition to the jack, as I've read several stories of peoples cars coming down on them when they are working beneath them.

maybe the wood i have is good but i've used the same small piece for years with no detrimental affect apart from some grooves permanently engraved in its mating surface with the jack
