Hi All. I have yet another problem: The Parktronic display (2002 W210 E320 CDI) on the driver's side (RHD) above the centre console is not illuminated, and I would like to fix this. It seems it it just the backlight of the display that is faulty. See Photo. Is it possible to replace the backlight or is the display a sealed unit? I have been scouring the Internet but I have not found any images/videos of the unit on my particular car which is a facelift model. How do I best access the unit. It seems removal of centre air vents involves removing the radio and aircon control unit. Can the display be better accessed by removal of the wooden strip which runs horizontally along the dashboard?

Look at the online parts websites to figure out how it fits together and if the lights are part of the cover or not.

The wooden trims are usually clipped in and make sure you use a trim removal tool to not damage anything.

You can see where the money went in building Mercedes when they had individual cut out in the veneer for the parktronic displays :)

Much cheaper these days to stick a moulded piece of plastic at the top of the dash or just add to the cheap stuck on lcd display :(

My thoughts exactly… This is my first MB, I must say I am very impressed with the general build quality. My other car is a 2006 Volvo S60. The MB feels so much more solid.

This;

I saw that video, I had hoped to avoid taking out the console radio and a/c control unit. There is a way of removing the wooden strip which houses the parktronic display unit.

Update: I was able to remove the wooden dash trim without difficulty. The Parktronic display was attached to the trim piece. I was able to remove the black housing of the display unit. There was a circuitboard underneath. I was unable to remove this. I had wanted to have a look at any backlight bulbs/leds. I put everything back together again, but unfortunately now both backlights are no longer working rather than just one. Annoying or what?

I am posting some pictures in the hope that this might help someone and also if anyone knows where I can find this part I would be much obliged.
Unfortunately the partnumber A2106807171 on the sticker does not help it refers to the trim piece rather than the display unit. The other number BORG A2106807171 also throws a blank on Google.

Sorry I forgot, taking photos was an afterthought. I took them after I put the thing back together

well done OP, Perhaps a little write up as to how you removed the trim. May help others in the future.

Its in the video I posted.
It is indeed, and also in the video I posted. Just start watching at the 10 minute 38 seconds point. I hope this video is also helpful to other forum members who wish to know about disassembly procedures on the W210, because it also covers the following:

Front and rear door panel removal
Side moulding removal
Centre console and instrument panel removal
Sliding roof disassembly
Removal of front and rear head restraints
Removal of headlamp housing
Removal of mirror housing
