Hi all,

I have noticed that when i am stopped in traffic i can smell fumes coming into the car. I got the exhaust checked out at fastfit and they said although the centre section has been replaced by a non mercedes one -the exhaust is fine. They advised me to change the pollen filter.

I went to my mercedes dealer, told him i was driving a 96w210 e230 and i wanted a pollen filter. He gave me a 203 830 10 18 which is a big single filter and from what i can determine would be more suitable for a C Class C200 CDI 03 or thereabouts. I dont soppose anyone would know the proper part number that i do require?

Thanks

Dave

Above the passenger's feet, remove the big plastic panel (3 or 4 screws IIRC). Let that drop down, you'll see a white plastic 'bar'. Remove that, the charcoal filter is in there. Its the charcoal filter that stops smells.

Just be careful pushing the white bar out of the way, if you cack handed you can break off the clips.

thanks for the replies folks. I will get stuck into that on wedensday ( next day off). I was looking at one site which suggested that there are filters behind the glovebox. Is this the case and if so should these be replaced also?

just an update.. on searching some more i think that the filters in the glovebox might be for a newer model equiped with auto climate control (digital readouts etc). I will hang on to the filter that i mentioned above until i take out the panel in the passanger footwell on wedensday - it might just be the right one!

i got a start on that tonight. I would say its a long time since that black panel in the footwell has been dropped. The speaker for the mobile phone had to be removed first! I didnt find a white bar as such but i did find two white plastic clips that slid in opposite directions to come off. Then the filter dropped down. As did a load of dust! I am guessing that at one point the filter might have been white. It's really dirty. The part number is BOSCH 1 987 431 001 It looks nothing like the one that the dealer gave me last thursday. I didn't try to take out the glovebox. I don't think i have filters back there. Anyway, I will go to the dealer tomorrow and see if he has a replacement one.

R230...about to purchase will update shortly
Hi moore. Id be surprised if you didnt have the filters behind the glovebox - they are pretty straight forward to replace and cost around £12 for the pair from GSF parts. They are approx 5"x10"x an inch thick. I think the two filters you have dropped down are the Charcoal filters - look like large slices of burnt toast!? - which would be black anyway. My 98 E430 had the charcoal filters changed around 4 years ago - I looked at them at Easter and they were like new.. The ones behind the glovebox though, should really be changed annually. You'll probably find a whole load of seeds, leaves and other crap in there. They should be white but go sooty pretty quickly with City driving!
Good luck

Thanks for the info surry steve, I brought back the filter to mercedes that i got last week and they should have the proper pollen filter tomorrow. In the mean time i went to OTTO german auto parts here in Cork and got a spurious filter to fit up into the slot in the passanger footwell. It's a paper filter however and not a charcoal filter. I will pull the glovebox tomorrow morning and see what filters are behind it and get them changed as i am still getting fumes into the car.

Just a quick update on this. I repaced the pollen filter in the passanger footwell. 16 euro for the filter from german auto parts (OTTO) cork, I have a spare MB one now (29 euro). The fumes are still there but a expert at everything tells me that its actually the smell of oil coming through the vents caused by a cracked rubber thing that goes from the air breather down into the engine. Its only a small black piece. When i find out whats its called i will see if i can get a new one.

Hi. I have just bought a 2005 E320 CDI - my first and I love it! I want to check the charcoal and pollen filters. I have unscrewed the panel in the passenger footwell but can't easily identify the place of the filters from the diagrams above posted by George.

Am I looking in the right place, are the filters fitted vertically and is there a better picture anywhere or even an online or haynes type manual does anyone know?

Hi,
Not sure where the filters are on a 211 but when I bought my pollen filter for the c class I bought it from Euro-car parts in Millbrook, and it came with instructions on exactly how to fit it, so they may be included with the filters.
