Hi Guys,

Been meaning to do some useful forum posts for a while, a week ago I replaced the shocks in my car after looking at the forums. I faced a bit of difficulty along the way, and here are my findings really. These may be obvious to some of you but I'm sure (or I hope) some of you may also find it useful.

Tools, this combo is great as it gives you the clearance to get over the lip in the bonnet, so a ratchet , extension bit and a 17mm deep socket, the deep socket is useful as it will allow you to reach the nut at the top of the shock

As show on other posts you will need to use a 17mm wrench as well to hold the bottom nut at the top of the shock. The image below shows the tools being used.

I also found that at the bottom of the shock, a 5/8th socket was required, strange that they would mix metric and imperial measurements, however a 16mm socket is useful for the bottom of the shock (also wrench, although I used a 5/8th wrench)

When I was doing my rear shocks I couldn't undo the nut, I found that the whole shock was turning using the same method as undoing the front shocks (see first image), so I ended up getting a spanner to hold the top of the shock and then using the spanner to undo the nut, (see picture below), the fact that I had to do this with the rear shock is not that important as you might have this issue with your front shocks.

When placing back the rear shock, I found that my new rear shocks were taller than my old rear shocks, now I don't know if they gave me the wrong part but the car seems to ride fine, this kind of threw me, would be interested to know if anybody can shed light on this, I got some Boge Sachs Shocks, as you can see the part number is 36-A65-0, my car is an E430 saloon elegance. They do however compress to the same level:

Now because the new shock was taller than the old one, it wasn't that easy to compress and fit, I read somewhere that you compress it with your hands and then tie a string, don't know how they did that but I was useless at doing it, so employed a different technique. I was not using my hyrdalic jack, as I was using the Mercedes supplied jack, and an axle stand. So I placed the top of the shock absorber in its position and then jacked up the rear shock with the hydrallic jack, to stop the bottom of the shock from getting damaged, I used the old rubber bit of the top of the old shock as cushioning

Now when I was just above the point where bottom of the shock was to go I pushed it so it fell in place. Now you got to be carefull here as it isn't that easy to move, so you got to make sure it goes in in the correct direction!

W210 shock tips Part 2

Carrying on from this, I found that even though I had successfully placed the bottom of the shock in the correct place, it wasn't perfectly aligned i.e. the hole where the bolt goes into the bottom of the shock was not aligned so I got my plyer to align the lift the shock in the correct position and then fed the bolt at the other end, then when it is well in you could remove the plyer.

I hope you find this useful.

Cheers
