Hello out there - first posting although I've been using the advice given to others for a while now. I've a W210 E230 estate 97 R and it may have had a hard life in a previous existance. No more though, as it gets a good pampering but today I drove 6 miles, parked up and when I came back to the car after 40 mins ther was a wailing like a police siren coming from the fuse box where the STAR connector is. There was no flashing of lights just the whine which wasn't especially loud.

I reset unlocked - nothing - locked - it went quiet and then got in to drive off. After a mile or so there was a beep in the cockpit and the 'siren' went on its way again - one full cycle low and high then a beep, then off on another cycle. I stopped, took the key out lock/unlock, the 'siren' stopped for 400yrds then the same again. And the same twicwe more over 2 miles.

I went to an empty carpark, reset locked the car and went for a walk - nothing - not a peep. I unlock using the remote, daughter gets in back seat and without even ptting a key in the ignition off goes the 'alarm' again. After messing about resetting, I got home. This time I activated the internal courtesy lights to make sure that all the doors were closed and locked up. After 3 indicator flashes they then started doing an impression of a disco whilst the interior lights remained on - no alarm sound though. I did a final unlock/lock and she's sat outside for the last 6 hours armed like a ticking time bomb.

Question. I only got the new remote last weekend (£215). Prior to that it was on the thin emergency key. So the alarm and central locking have only been in use for a week. The first time I used the fob I could hear a very quiet 'pinging' from the fuse box area when the car was in an unlocked state. Lots of forum threads mention the alarm being on the passenger side - so is what I'm hearing the actual alarm?

Sorry about the info overload here.

When you got the new remote it should have been "cloned" and set in sync with the car -if it was from an MB dealer go back to them and ask have it re-set ?
This should cure the problem.

The key should work straight out of the box without any re-setting needed. I think you have a problem with your siren. A Star test will show the fault.

Thanks and I think that a STAR test is the next step. Anyway, it was a quiet night on the alarm front.

Just one further question - is what I'm hearing the actual 'alarm' because if it is, it ain't that loud. It's more annoying than anything. Other threads say that the alarm is under the passenger side wheel arch, but this sound originates from the bonnet fuse box underneath the relays (or could it be an illusion of the alarm in ther drivers side wheel arch?

So much to learn about this car and no manual - ho hum.

Thanks Malcolm,

After a trouble free trip out today - it's just triggered itself 20min ago. I'll find the siren and unplug as suggested. Also I might unlock the door with the blade key and see if the alarm 'goes off' as it should do.

The blade key will not unset the alarm

I wanted to trigger the alarm by using the blade key but then switch it off by placing the transponder key in the ignition - thereby establishing if all those different sounds I was hearing were intruder alarm related. Just tested it out and that proved to be the case - the alarm is functioning correctly in that sense.

I did notice when I got into the car after a 'false' alarm that the drivers side door switch wasn't working correctly and it's action was intermitent (sometimes the interior lights would come on, sometimes not). I'm wondering if this could be giving the trigger signal to the alarm? Although would that explain the triggering of the alarm whilst driving?

I will stick it on a STAR diagnostic after the bank hols but may do a little investigating tomorrow such as battery charging/condition and clean up the door switch with contact cleaner.

thanks for the advice so far.
