If there are any welds around the upstanding lip, where the sealing rubber is pushed onto,,water can go under the rubber seal over the lip and into the car. lifting off the rubber sealer, putting some sealing mastic like Loctite super flex over the welds in a few inches in both directions will stop the water from coming in from there

I sure do and despite sealing every joint, seal and opening I could see it still comes in, has done since I purchased it and MB would not believe it happened - "sorry sir we can find no 'ingress point' so it must simply be splashing off the top of the boot lid" yes have to admit I did arrive on the second to last banana boat to hit these shores - in the same league as denying MB's rust really:(

I'm sure that there's an old post about this somewhere.

I don't suffer water ingress myself, but my boot does tend to collect water somewhere behind either the number plate bulb trim or the number plate itself, which then cascades into the boot if I'm not careful.

I did try removing the number plate on one occaision but found that one of the screws was rusted in. Perhaps water is getting into your boot through the number plate fixing hole. It would then exit around the boot lock I would think.

High level stop lamps are a reason due to poor stampings

Thanks for input, but have really tried everything,as i said it seems to collect in the boot lid itself, then when you open it,it drains through where the holes are to replace the bulbs in the lights in the boot lid!?

I used tom have loads of info on these leaks, but they get deleted as the years pass.

the only one that I have it water penetration through where the boot lock fits on removing this and sealing it could help now that I under where the leak is

Exactly the same spot, it pours in. Comes in through the sames cutouts in the lid lining on the LH side. I find it also happens after washing the car.

Take the lid lining out and have a look to see if you can spot any water trails or even rust trails.

Following a suggestion that it might be the lock barrel gasket I sealed it with a non-hardening compound the stuff used to seal caravan outer skin joints - Caraseal I think. I even removed the number plate and put two circles of sealant around the screw holes all to no avail.

The only thing I can now think of is the (plastic) cover to the number plate lights, not the actual lights themselves but the long piece that you lift the boot lid with, that is the only item I have not touched.

I did the check of the boot lid seal and it is perfect, you can see where the lid sits on it.

If you do find the ingress point please let me know as I am about to have the lid rust removed and repainted so would want to sort this problem out before going ahead with the work.

Attached is the inside of a W202 with the boot liner removed, there are many “pockets” where water is stored until the lid is opened.

With the liner removed, stuff paper towel in the openings of the lid structure, high up and low down, this will identify where the water is entering immediately after you do a hose test.

Worth checking those foglamp fittings as well.

The paper towel idea is a good tip, had to use that on my wife's micra before we located the leak as being due to an imperfection in the rear light cluster, foam seal.

As per the previous suggestion stuff paper towel into various apetures within the boot lid.

Then using a low pressure hose or watering can to test out specific areas.

Be methodical and test say the lights first, then the boot lock, the number plate and finally the number plate light trim.

Each time check for signs of water on the paper towel.

Just drill a small 3mm hole on the underside of the boot lid so any water can get out the proper side of the boot seal.

Would take a pic buts its having new gearbox fitted.

Mine also let water in via the rear star badge the 3 prongs that hold it to the boot are not sealed.
