Hi,
I wonder if any member can provide assistance or advice with the problem I am having with my Year 2001 E200 Komp. - Manual transmission
I have included only what I think is relevant information but if anyone wants to ask anything else - feel free.
The car is in good condition with approx 130,000 miles recorded.
To pass the Irish N.C.T.(M.O.T.) test I had to carry out the following works among others and the car was running fine until then.
I. Replace rear brake pads.
2. Adjust rear hanbrake shoes to achieve required efficency and balance across
the rear axle
3. Replace the upper suspension arm on the near side . ( this involved removing and refitting the electrics/e.c.u. forward of the bulkhead to gain access to the top bolt securing the arm.

It is worth noting here that I found that one of the multiplugs in the second ecu/ control unit from the bulkhead was saturated in oil - a common problem I am led to believe.

I copmpleted the various jobs without problem and the car started first time on completion .
However on starting the abs / esp/ bas/ lights wouldnt extinguish and the speedo failed to work .
After trying the usual simple cures - fuses - loose wires etc - I drove the car to a guy with a diagnostic unit which showed up - open circuit rear n/s wheel sensor .
I bought a good 2nd hand speed sensor which I fitted but all lights remained on.
I checked continuity on all speed sensor wires - all fine and resistance across all speed sensors.
When I went back to the car the next day it refused to crank and the cooling fan started to run after a few secs.
I suspect an ecu problem from reading various posts on here but i live in a remote area and it will be difficult and expensive to get a "dead" car to someone with a diagnostic unit .
Anybody got any suggestions or does anybody know if there is a way of confirming whether or not the ecu is knackered.
Thanks for your attention ,
Paul.

Yes we have seen it before, there are some fuses for the engine ECU that are worth checking, the fan is running because the ECU is not getting 12 volt somewhere that turns the fan relay off.

Has the battery been removed and put back

Yes I took the battery out during replacement of various items for NCT test as a precaution. Checked all fuses also. It was not out however immeadiately prior to the non starting issue - Thanks for your input by the way - PAUL.

There are some relays that are worth checking, do you have the fuse list

To save a lot of work if you can do a good search this has all been covered with all of the testing, fuses and end results.

There were 2 threads running earlier this year on the same fault and same car.

One should do a search, I for one was in on those threads, if I get time today I will try and find them

Anybody had any further thoughts on my problem - Paul.

My concern is that you have caused the problem yourself, with the work moving the ECU case.
Can you describe exactly what you did here?

Worth checking all the fuses on the k40 in the case, and that all plugs are pushed fully home.

Hi,
I totally agree .
It was working perfectly before I tackled this work so logic dictates etc .
Couple of things puzzle me though .
How it ran ok after repairs albeit with abs lights etc for a few days.
I have spent a lot of time checking connections and fuses in the area of the ecu box .
Is there anyway of sending a power supply to the ecu - possibly thro' the k40 relay to check the ecu.
Thanks for your assistance
Paul.

I suspect there is a blown fuse in the K40 relay as Alex has already alluded to, usually caused by a siezed cooling fan in the ECU box itself.

Actually Steve when the fan goes short circuit in the box it just takes out the 10 amp fuse and not the big one
