220 CDI with 160k on it, I have owned for 6 years - I’m in NI and use indy. Just noticed yesterday the that the engine cover had some oil on it and injector cover. One Injector really mucky - from searching this forum looks to be black death See pictures.

I’m hoping its the seals and can be cleaned/fixed without replacement injector.

Also notice some other gunge in couple of other areas - one top of engine near egr, the other low down bottom below belts. Thoughts on issue and fixes?

That certainly looks like "black death" but early as not too built up, suspect injector will just need a new washer.

Thanks Andy. So just a seal & new bolt required, those look cheap part wise - what would be expected cost from indy supplied and fitted?

Hi, sorry for delay in replying.

A lot depends on how east t is to remove the injector, yours looks fairly early so should be relatively easy, would imagine under £100. Sounds a lot when you look at price of parts.

Had one done a couple of years ago but sold car so no longer have invoice, sorry.

Hi BrokenCross,

Your engine is still relatively clean but has the tell tell sign of diesel 'tar' gumming up the area around the offending Injector.

When it gets worse you will hear a 'chuff' 'chuff' sound as the diesel, (and air - under compression), is forced out through the gap in the seal.

You can buy replacement seal kits that include seals for each Injector as well as new mounting bolts - usually under £10!!

It is a relatively 'simple' job as long as long as luck is on your side as: -

1. The Injector may be gummed into the head and will require careful extraction without damaging the Injector or surrounding head area!

2. The mounting bolt thread is not damaged from previous 'attention'!

3. The Injector seat will probably require re-cutting to ensure a good seal, (cutting kit available for about £15).

4. You do NOT allow any debris to fall through Injector hole into engine!!!!

5. Equally importantly you do not allow debris to fall into Injector mounting bolt hole either!!

Being careful and, (ideally using vompressed airline and vacuum), it is very straightforward.

Unless, like me, you are working on a Jeep Grand Cherokee, (with Merc 2.7CRD 5 cylinder engine), where the last 2 cylinders are under the bulkhead and inaccessible - thus requiring engine removal!

Fortunately on a older vehicle it is simply a matter of cutting out access holes over the last 2 Injectors!!

Take care out there!

And despite all of this I am still hankering over a C220 Sport, (or possibly a later E Class)!

I am just a glutton for punishment!
