I now comute a fair bit on the M1 and M25 and there is a quite a bit of slow traffic.
What i have noticed is that on very light throttle once the box has selected top gear that under certain conditions ie very light throttle with the slightest of incline so there is the smallest of load on the engine it tends to very gently surge. I f you look at the rev counter you can see this slight climbing and falling.
Other conditions its not there, its difficult to find the 'spot'
Question:
Have i found a 'hole' in the calibration or do you think there is a sensor going down somewhere.
Its quite difficult to replicate but the M25 seems to highlight it a little more.
Other than that it runs great, 50 mpg, pull clean from any revs
any ideas

I honestly dont think you have a problem, but well worth having it checked on a star machine just to allay any fears..

I also have 2005 E220cdi with 38000 miles - recent gear box oil/filter change and changes are smooth - however, in slow traffic (20-30mph crawling and stop start) using a light throttle mine also does the same more pronounced when gear box is in S mode and not noticeable in C mode.

It seems the car is hunting right gear and cannot quite make its mind up with regard to which is the correct gear for situation - its a very smooth slight surge and I do feel nothing to worry about.

I also thought I read somewhere that these gear boxes adjust themselves to drivers style and maybe slower stop start driving is not recognised instantly??

Hope this helps

Bill
