Recently purchased a E270 Estate Avantgarde deisil. (53 reg) Two weeks after purchase all the warning lights on the instrument cluster panel stopped working. All the funnctions they relate to work perfectly. When I turn on the ignition no lights at all appear in the instrument panel. I have checked the fuses, and there are no fuses dedicated to the instrument panel. Has anyone encountered this problem and can advise before I go to the MB workshop.

You were right. My local MB garage confirmed I need a new cluster - cost, £739 to supply + fitting, they reckon arount £1000 in total. MB have refused 'goodwill' they say my car is too old even though it has FMSH and is in mint condition. There's no way I will be replacing it at that price. Many thanks for your response.

Keep an eye on fleabay and the specialist merc breakers. You should be able to pick up a replacement for a fraction of that amount. It will still need recoding but a friendly indie should be able sto sort that for minimal cost.

Yesterday I was carrying out a complete detailing on my car and had the radio on for a long period. When I went to move the car I found the battery flat with insufficient power to turn the engine over, but lo and behold all the lights on the Instrument cluster were working. I used jump leads to get started and the instrument cluster has worked perfectly since. I know that this may be a short lived reprieve, but now when I think of it, the original problem started one day after I had inadvertently left the headlights on all day thus draining the battery, could this have contributed to the problem.

Hi nearly 3 years down the road - if you still have the car has the problem stayed away, as you may have guessed I have the same problem with the warning lights on dash thanks

Cluster panel dead!

Hi, i bought a 57 reg e220 diesel saloon Executive in sep 2011 with 91k miles but very good condition and fsh. Today I drove it and found the instrument panel completely dead with none of the functions working. The auto door locking when pulling off also doesnt work and even though all functions such as head lights, indicator lights still work you can not tell they are on from the drivers seat. After googling the problems and reading about similar issues in this forum I have checked all the fuses which are ok and also disconnected battery (as one person said he did and it worked for him) but no luck. Another forum member reported that MB garage said he needed a new cluster panel and this would cost approx £1000 to supply and fit - this is a ridiculous cost for a part that should not fail after 4 years on a merc!
Can anyone else shed has any ideas on what else i can try to get this working or to test if it really is faulty and needs replacing or else get this ****** thing working again without paying such an extortionate cost from MB! I bought a merc because of build quality and I know that car parts fail from wear and tear but do not expect a cluster panel to fail so soon!
Many thanks. Pete

Thanks guys, but I want to get merc to replace this for free (hopefully!) as this component shouldnt be failing after 4 years! Had AA guy check it out and he checked all the fuses, under bonnet, on driver side door and in the boot and then diconnected the battery for a couple of minutes but still nothing. He said it was possibly a module that had failed? Said it needed to go to merc or a merc specialist and placed on the computer to diagnose where the fault lies. Sigh. Not impressed Mercedes!! Was better off with my vw golf 1.6 fsi!

I agree they shouldn't fail but out of the tens of thousands produced, I guess the odd one is going to go down early. Happens to every make - even VW!! (I can think of several stories..)
As for getting MB to pay, you'd have more luck if you'd owned it longer, ideally from new as you could argue that it's not long out of warranty and you're a regular MB customer etc. Having the dealer fight on your side makes a massive difference too. As you're not a regular customer, and don't already have a relationship, it's doubtful they're going to go out on a limb for you. They have so many 'favours' they can claim I guess and they're going to save them for their regular customers. It's understandable.
Getting MB to shell out for the whole job is unlikely. More likely they'd offer to make a 'substantial contribution of 50%' which would still leave you with more to pay than if you simply had yours sorted yourself. Plus the're not actually contributing anything as they'll claim 50% off the labour from the dealer (whilst you pay the other 50%) and the part stands them at a couple of hundred whilst they bill you at £800+. They'll actually make a profit on the deal!!
Hence I wouldn't bother. Save yourself the hassle and get your own fixed.

Thanks for that, you are probably right. Will take it to a merc specialist to put on computer to diagnose (to see exactly where the fault lies, could be another component like the AA man said, a "module" or transformer etc? it might not necessarily be the cluster panel at fault, but if it is this then I will surely get mine repaired by cluster repairs uk for approx £150.
Thanks again for all your advice and comments everyone. Will keep you updated.

update: went to merc specialist who put car on merc computer and found that it was in fact the cluster panel faulty (cost me £90 just for a diagnosis). So I tried all morning to call cluster repairs uk at both their North London branch and their headquarters in Great Yarnmouth and but no one answered - they didnt even have an answer machine! I emailed them as per their website and still no response. I then discovered in small print on their website that they are not doing any more work til 6th Feb? Some way to run a business!
So can anyone suggest another place i can get my cluster repaired. I am in North London. Thanks.

Right, ended up sending my faulty cluster to http://www.actronics.eu/ who charged £135 (via ebay, paid in advance) to repair my cluster and came with 2 year warranty. It took 8 days to get it back (they cldnt find issue but then told me they had to order a new part, a processor) but at least its been repaired and is working again back in my car - very happy! Mercedes charges about £1k to replace cluster which is ludricrous! If anyone else has a faulty cluster then i suggest sending to them. Am just happy I finally have my car back, but VERY disappointed in Mercedes for such a part to fail in that way! Thanks to all those who helped me and suggested what to do to get my issue sorted. Great site!
