Hi all,

Tryed to start car today but doesnt even crank!

It comes up with a few errors, such as, "Brake defective", "Electric consumers not functioning" etc.

Anyone know what could be wrong? Had this problem a while ago, but a simple jump fixed it, tryed jumping it today but car still not even trying to start...

Its a 2004 e270 cdi W211

Thanks,

Digi

Try disconnecting the battery and charging. then go from there.

A sbc fault can cause the car not to crank.

A star test maybe required to establish what is wrong.

Defective brake and consumers off all point to low voltage. As you've had this one before already, and fixed with a jump start, I'd start with a new battery.

a new battery was put in about a month ago. Got the car recovered to a local garage, so far, the batterys been charged but still not starting. Garage read the codes, but nothing useful was coming up. He checked and found that no power was going to the starter motor, so he thinks it might be one of the modules, still doesnt know the problem though.

Any ideas from anyone here? thanks.

I know how you feel. My dad is in the same boat with his 03 E220. Seems to be the earlier 211 gremlins coming back. His is minor with parktronic and the radio going haywire from time to time, but he spent a small fortune replacing modules and isn't much further on.

The fact that late 04/ early 05 - ones seem to be a whole lot better isn't much consolation. MBs dumb costcutting will be echoing for a fair while yet.

sounds like flat battery to me, if not check fuse 51 in front sam, starter fuse, if 15 amp and blown needs to be uprated to 20amp, (mbs instructing), other fault iv seen on 211 is wiring rub thro under sbc battery, put ign on, try taking out off park, if it comes out then something other than rub thro!!!

the garage thinks it may be the immobiliser which is not allowing car to be started, says, it might have to be taken to merc dealer to get it reset?

Any ideas if this could be the problem?

just came back from garage, to see if he can check tthe pre starter fusebox. Says he checked all the other fuses. Does anyone know where the pre starter fusebox that is, on the passenger side is? Is it easy to get to? The garage reckons itll take him half an hour to strip the glovebox down to get to it.

thanks

the solution that the pre starter fuse is at fault sounds convicing to me because the problem is that, the power is not going from the battery to the starter motor, so seems to me a link between them has broken.

To my knowledge, MB don't fit fuseboxes in silly places. I;'ve never come across one where anything more than a cover needs to be removed. There is a fusebox on the side of the dash but that is accessed by simply popping the panel off with a flat blade screwdriver. There's a small indent moulded into the cover to allow this.

The 211 does have a pre starter fuse box under the dash passengers side where the main cable to the starter connects and this connection arc's causing no contact made.

I have sent him the working drawings, and hope this is the fault

I have gone as far as I can, the whole thing is CAN operated as dieselman said it could be, it needs to go on STAR now and no other way I think.

An outline is

The starter is CAN controlled from the drivers side N10/1 SAM and fuse box, this is all can coupled to the K57/2 aux battery relay, the K75 cut off relay, and starts off at the KEY.

I cant print this info, and this is as far as I can go. sorry.

Hi all,

A guy is going to the garage where it is at, to do diagnostic with machine, so hopefully find out from there.

Any guesses from the members here as to what could be the problem, in car not even trying to start?

thanks

It's in the handbook. Something like 50 miles at not more than 50mph but that's just a guess. Ideally though it should be trailered or at least towed with the rear wheels off the ground on a dolly.
Where are you? - hopefully someone can put you in touch someone locally who knows the 211 better and you never know, they may even have their own trailer. Worth asking anyway.

hi all,

just got car back from garage, £280 lighter...

heres what was done:

replace engine control relay
repair bad soldier joint in control box
erase all engine codes and reset
charge battery
check connections from battery to starter junction box under front of car tighten and rebuild car.

service note: cause of problem can not determined due to the vast mount of codes the car had stored in its memory.

thanks for all help,
