Hi all, the electric sunroof on my 2004 W211 seems faulty. When pressing the switch fully & than letting go, the sunroof gets to about an inch or so before the closed position, then stops, and retracts to about half way open before stopping again. It will shut & open OK if you hold the button down. Have tried to reset it as per the handbook but with no change.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers...........joker.

Keep going inch by inch, just before fully opened hold the switch, the same for closing, that should reset it!!

Hi all.................. afraid the sunroof problem has returned. SAM's reset procedure worked first time (last time if you know what I mean), but it won't reset now even though i've tried a number of times.

Any thoughts/help would be appreciated.

Cheers.............Joker.

if the normal reset no longer works, I think you best get the codes read on STAR

Is the roof closing at the normal speed, or making any noises

as above, sounds like it is sticking or some such causing confusion of the control unit.

it will have a position counter built in with the motor, this will be read by the overhead control panel. it could be a problem with this sensor (hall effect i believe) or if it is sticking or labouring the cotrol unit may not believe the signal from the sensor (thinks the roof can not be moving so slow) or it could be taking too much current, and so the unit thinks it is at the end of its travel.

the position sensor in the motor is just a pulse generator btw, the unit counts the pulses and remembers which position the roof is in - until the power is disconnected. this is why windows and roof need resetting after battery disconnection.

Hi all, thank you for your replies. The roof seems very smooth & quiet, and does not slow down at all throughout the entire length of travel. The roof stops abruptly & returns immediately at the correct speed. As nothing's showing up on STAR where do you think is best to start?

Could this be an expensive job? because it may well be best to just live with it which would be a shame.

Cheers..................Joker.

you say nothing is showing on star, do you mean no fault codes?

star is also able to show the current position of the motor, also can re-initialise the position. furthermore star can display the current consumption of the motor as well as indicate the maximum allowable in the guided tests. if the movement is fine suspect the hall sensor signal, or motor current consumption. either way the star machine will show all.

Why not remove the fuse for 10 mins and re fit and see if it will memorize again, if it fails to then the ECU could be faulty, even if it does not show up on STAR
