I have provision for a phone in my 2003 e320 Cdi avantgarde estate, but no phone is present. What phones were used in these cars.

Not being a mobile phone geek, can I used any phone, ie. pay as you go, as I already have one of these just for emergency use. Granted, it is much smaller than the cradle that is in the car, but would it be possible to adapt it at all.

The first thing to do is to check to see in the phone has any pre wiring at all,,if the car is before 2005-6 then enter the vin 17 figures into this site and it will tell you

if you have pre-wiring then I'd probably look at a blue tooth module rather than a handset, that allows most blu tooth phones to connect up with your car

My car W211, E320 CDI of 2006 came complete with all necessary wiring for the phone. The only thing I needed is an adapter for my Nokia phone (cost about 180 Euro’s). Then just put the phone on Bluetooth and start working.

regards,
Robert

2003 pre-dates the UHI prewire system so you can't change the cradle. They supplied a number of prewired cradles for various phones but in my experience, most were for the Nokia 6310i. These were very popular phones and still are. In fact, despite being out of production for a long while now, you can still get them! http://www.6310i.co.uk/store/
If this is the right cradle (post a photo if you're unsure) then getting a phone is an option. The other option is that you can get a 6310i shaped bluetooth module from http://www.comandonline.co.uk/home.php?cat=252. (Viseeo MBU1000) and use any phone you like.

So, idiot here left his E320 CDI avantgarde 2004 unlocked last night and some of the NW2 low grade opened her up and nicked just about eveything inside including the Nokia 6310i from its cradle. That cost me £10 on e bay and was a cracker. Just ordered another and tomorrow will spend around £400 to replace the tools they took. I hope they help to give employment to the next recipients. I also hope that one day the people who did this find themselves on the receiving end. Of course idiot here left the car unlocked with tools inside...No excuse. None whatsoever. Sorry to go on, only posted to make the Nokia comment!!

It's really galling when you do something silly like that and it's your own fault, the only positive that can be taken from it is that you are very unlikely to make the same mistake again sir.
The 6310i's a great old phone too but, the tools!!! No consideration that a man might need these to feed his family, scumbags.
I'm a great believer in what goes round comes round, so, hopefully the low lives suffer an equally miserable fate soon!
